LONDON 'BUSMEN OBJECT.

SHORT STRIKE IN PROTEST AGAINST NEW TIME. TABLES.

TRAFFIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE RAILWAYS.

:

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

LONDON, October 7th. There is unrest among London busmen, and it is due to the higher speed that is now permitted in the case of vehicles fitted with pneumatic tyres. The regulation of a minimum speed of 14 miles an bour still holds good for buses and Alorries with solid tyres, but the

big pneumatics" can travel at 20 miles an hour with the approval 7.47 of the Ministry of Transport and the assistance of the policeman on point duty at the street corner.

The London General Omnibus Company have taken advantage of the concession and have altered their timetables on certain routes. Where traffic is not congested their drivers are expected to do a journey in less than one-third the time hitherto scheduled. But the drivers object, and this week some of them came out on strike in protest. In the Romford area: bus traffic was disorganised for a whole day, till the men returned to duty on the understanding that their grievance will be carefully considered. For a. space it was uncertain whether the whole of the bus services in London would be affected, but happily this was avoided.
