"You have shown pure neglect and slovenliness. The way that some of you masters run your ships is a disgrace to the British Ang. There are probably a lot of other people who do the same thing and it is hoped that they will take a warning from this.

So said the Marine Magistrate. Comdr. J. B. Newill, D.S.O... R.N when he imposed a fine of 6 ster- ling on Captain Alexander Nelson Sexton, master of the 9.3. Anjou, who was found guilty en the follow. ing counts:-

The first mate was instructed to

find the Master who arrived at the Office at noon. On inspecting the official log witness found that the entry referring to Mr. Copeland had not been signed by the mate or any other member of the crew. Yor was the entry made about the new mate-Mr. Hutchence. Witness also found that the ship's draught, when she sailed on October 27th, was not recorded, nor was the ex- tent of the clear side of the ship entered. In fact there were no such entries since the articles were open- ed on June 24th, 1999.

In producing the official log book, witness remarked that even up to the present time he had not received the account of, wages due to Mr. Copeland. Mr. Copeland's subs quent death did not effect the case, as at the time, it was merely a case of sickness.

Cross-examined by the defendant. witness said that he remembered the defendant and the owner of the vessel coming to "the office November 5th.
