GENERAL FREIGHTS

INCREASE.

TWENTY ARRIVALS...

With twenty arrivals and nine teen departures during the 24 hours ended at 9 am. yesterday the general cargo returns again showed High totals. Local imports were good, while through freights show ed a very high Egure.. British con- tributions to both sections were satis Factory, while tea arrivals and eight departures were shown. Fifteen Vessels discharged, 16,383 tons of general merchandise for this port of which 7,820 tons were contributed by six British ships.

The two best cargo returns were from the .. Filfred (Norwegian) arriving from Chinwangtao with 3,410 tons of coal. and the ss. Treuellard (British) from Calcutta, and Singapore with 2,330 tons of general merchandise.

Through freights showed a total of 23,832 tons of which 10,530 tons were carried by eight British ships. The best carrier was the .1. Zoma (Dutch) from Antwerp and Manila with 9,962 tons tons of general mer: chandise. The 8.1, Beulomond (British). arriving from London and Singapore had 4,500 tons.

Sanning (British) arrived from Tsingtao and Swatow with 400 tons of general cargo for Hong Kong and 930 tons for through ports:

Yat Shing (British) arrived from 'Canton with 915 tons of general cargo for through ports.

Hai Ning (British) arrived from Foochow and Swatow with 420 tons of general cargo.

City of Perth (British) arrived from New York and Iloilo with 500 tons of sugar, oil and general cargo for this port and 95 tons general cargo for ports beyond.

Trewelland (British) arrived from Calcutta and Singapore with 2.330 tons of general cargo for Hong Kong and 4,207 tons for through purts.

STOWAWAY ON TROOPSHIPS.

Two young Russians were charged at the Central Magistracy yester day with having stowed themselves away on board the troopship Somer- setshire which arrived in the morn- ing from Shanghai. The Police in- formed the Magistrate that only -two out of every ter persons who

arrive in the Colony as stowaways. are handed over to the police. The two defendants who were found hiding in a motor boat near the stern of the ship were each sentenc ed to one month's hard labour.

Leung Wong, coxswain of the Steam launch Hop On was fined 83 by Comdr. J. B... Newill, D.S.O., R.N., at the Marine Court yester day morning for failing to ease his engines to a sped of 3 knots when passing through the Youmali Break-

water...

The master of a cargo bost was summoned for carrying passengers other than those required to work cargo. The defendant stated that the 20 passengers who were on his boat were rice coolies, and had stay- ed on board a steamer in harbour that night. Wishing to get ashore the next morning, they called his beat. He hoisted his sign to call a launch bit acne came, and he was obliged to take the passengers ashore himself. A fine di #20 re- presenting 81 per passenger was. imposed.
