"The system of Travellers' Cheques was originated in 1891 by the Americsa Expresi Company with the object of creating a form of travel currency which would give the bolder the security of a letter of credit and at the same time the convenience of local currency. The Company registered the EXPRESS of AMERICAN chaques under the trade name TRAVELERS CHEQUES* the word "Travellers' being spelled with one "1". The advantage of the Cheque was so apparsat that other banking institutions adopted the system.
