MACAO RACES.

SIGNAL SUCCESS OF HONGKONG PONIES.

GOOD SPORT UNDER PLEASANT CONDITIONS,

MACAO CRACK BADLY BEATEN.

BY EARLY BIRD.]

race meeting of the I brilliant sunshine the tenth extra International Race and Recreation Club of acab was held vesterplay before a large and enthusiastic, gathering of racegoers. The Governor of Macao's pony- Veloz, ridden by Mr. G. da Roza, was returned a winner, but unfortunately the Governor' This pleasant duty was arrived too late to lead the pony in. performed by Mr. H. H. H. Priestley, the genial President of the Club, who incidentally was the winning owner of the meeting. Mr. Priestley's candidates won two races and secured two third places. Altogether five Hong Kong ponies won, three were pinzed second, and four were placed fourth.

Backers had nothing to complain about regarding the divi dends, which, considering the form of most of the winners, were very good. Mr. Proulx, who rode a second on Sutherland, paid the biggest divvy of the meeting, which was $27.80.

Mr. G. I da Roza was the winning jockey, with two wins and two seconds. Mr. Wong came next with two wins. "Mr. Clark. Mr. Charles, and Mr. Backhouse each rode one winner. The last named jockey put another notch to his winning mounts "by win- ning the novice's race on" Grey Eyes.

The officials of the Race Clu, vied, with each other to ensure the success of the meeting and I have no doubt the excellence of the sport provided was appreciated by the large number present..

Major Hogg took "the place of Mr. Fiddes-Wilson as starter. and with a few exceptions managed to get the fields away in good style.

THE RACING.

October Novice Race. Proceedings started in business- like style by the success of Grey Eyes, who accounted for the open ing event by a comfortable margin. Backhouse, who had the mount, showed good judgement in the handling of the winner, keeping him well together until pressed, when he came away and quickly disposed of U. Un II and Ching Hai, who filled the places.

The Coimbra Handicap "A" Class Backers summed the situation very cleverly, the three best backed animals occupying the leading.. placca at the finish.

AN ARCHDEACON AT THE TEA-TABLE.

PRAISE FOR LONDON STAGE.

What topics are discussed by visitors to London from the United States!

A London reporter found himself at the same tea-table in a West! End store as three American visi tora.

Was A " emiling One of them cleric, abort of stature and with greying hair, the Venerable Joseph H. Dodahon, Archdeacon of South- ern Ohio. He had been on a shop; ping expedition with his wife and sister, and was talking to them of the courtesy of the assistants in the great business house.

"Why" he said, "we would never have found a young assistant

New York Bummed Up,

In New York the only thing that counts is the dollar. New York is owned by Jews and ruï by Irishmen and some of the people there are American. Lop- don's variety houses are marvel- lous; one of the things I liked about them is the custom of serving afternoon tea in the in- a wonderful cus- terval. It is tom.

After criticising university life in the United States-" sport counts most over there," he said; “if you are good at football nothing else matters very much."

A Critic Of Molso..........

He had some criticisms to make. "Why do pot the authorities take action against those motorists who roar up the Embankment at night.
