CARGO TOTALS SHOW A DECREASE.

16,000 TONS BRITISH IMPORTS.

The general cargo returns for Hong Kong and through ports for the g4 hours ended at 0.. yes terday were lower than the pre- vious day's gares Eowever, both were slightly alive the average, British imports being very good. Ten arrivals and fifteen departures were shown of which six arrivals and six departures were British vessels.

Six vessels discharged a total of 11,12 tons of general merchandise for this port of which four British ships contributed

10.643 tens. The best carrier was the s.3. Baron Bethaven from Jara with 8,000 tons of sugar. This vessel is à British ship under the charter of Messrs. Jara-China-Japan Lijn The 'sa. Luore (British) had 1,930 tons of general cargo for this port.. Through freights carried by eight vessels amounted to 14,619 tons of which 8,501 tons were con- tributed by five British ships. The best carrier was the 8.8. Japan (Swedish) from Vladivostock and Shanghai with 8,930 tons of general The s.s. Lahore (British) cargo. was again second best carrier with 3,936 tons.

A mishap is reported by the Master of the sa Japan (Swedish) which arrived from Vladivostock and Shanghai." The report "states that the vessel struck two junks on September 28th off Bonham, Strait. No damage to either vessel is re- ported and no lives were lost. The vessel left Shanghai on September 29th.

The masters of a trading junk and a fishing boat were before the Marine Magistrate for being underway in the harbour without the regulation lights on, their boats. Both defendants pleaded guilty and a fine of 810 with the alternative of ten days' imprison- meat was imposed on both defen- dants.
