The balance was left unpaid and although several requests had been made for a settlement it was still outstanding.

The defence was that defendant himself was sub-contractor the work having been sub-contracted to them by one Toh Kee. Defendant in his turn sub-contracted it to the plaintiff subject to the condition that the work was to be done to the tractor. The defendant alleged that satisfaction of the original con- Toh Kee was not satisfied with the work done and also complained of from the bunkers. As a result of some wires having been removed plaintiff's negligence, the sum of 8278 was deducted from defendant's account by the original, contractor. October 16th.

The Master (Capt. M." Gordon, R.D., R.N.R.) of the P. & O. liner Lahore which arrived here yester day from Rotterdam and Singa- NEXT SAILINGS TO EUROPE:- pore reported that the vessel went ground on soft mad at 11 am. on September 30th at the following position:-Latitude 939 Loagtitude 114 30. However the vessel got off with the rising tide at noon and proceeded on her voyage to Hong Kong. The vessel She was sustained no damage. carrying some 5,786 tons of cargo and is herself a vessel of 3,101 net and 5,303 gross.
