SOME VIEWS AND REVIEWS.
[BY C. L. C.)
It is most surprising how people go about breaking "their hearts | without day apparent cause. "Broken-Hearted's" letter which appeared in the Daily Press gester- day did not come to me as a sur- prise. As a matter of fact, I pected that someone would censure me for not pillorying Zafra_for_de, fying the base umpire, Mr. Lee, during Sunday's

PRESIDENT OF MAGDALEN
RETIRES.
UNIVERSITY BETTER THAN
IN THE PAST,
Sir Herbert Warren, the Pre- sident of Magdalen College, after holding that office for 43 years, will retire, at the end of September, states the London Morning Post.
He intends to remain in Oxford at No. 74, Woodstock Road, and he will devote his leisure to the writing of his memories of Oxford during the last fifty years.
He declares that there has been an improvement in the standard of work, not only at Magdalen, but throughout the whole University, for the number of young men taking honours has increased and the number of pass men" has decreased. Oxford also has become more voca- tional and young men come to it more definitely with the idea of studying for a profession-theology, law, or medicine.

During his term of office Herbert has superintended the "studies of three Royal Princes-the Prince of Wales, Prince Chichibu of Japan, "and the late Prince Christian Victor.
Royal Undergraduatės, The Prince of Wales was an
undergraduate at Magdalen from
1019 to 1914, but he was-uhabic to complete his course owing to the outbreak of the War. Sir Herbert says that the Prince, who studied French and German, always worked "hard. He used to write, an essay
for the President once a week.
He also went to lectures on his tory and political economy, and attended lectures on constitutional law delivered by Sir William Anson, the Warden of All Souls, who was one of the greatest author- ities on the subject.

A jolly-faced Boateran who hailed me with seductive words descriptive of the joys of a trip up the rippling Arun was the first to allude to Littlehampton's proud feeling.
"I suppose you know," he said, that we have had Princess Mary's boys here, and didn't they enjoy themselves. You should have seen them digging away on these sands and sailing their little boats on the pond. And only this last week-end the Prince of Wales was golfing on the links."

He jerked his pipe in the direction of Littlehampton's breezy course, which stretches beside the Arun's banks."
It seems that Littlehampton is to become quite famous as a royal playground, for I hear that the Prince so greatly enjoyed his games on its golf course that he declared he would come again soon. I think that the children who are bere now are rather proud on their own account of digging where the small grandsons of the King and Queen dug At any rate, you might hare heard two tiny girls arguing quite heatedly to-day over the ques tion of the exact whereabouts of the site of the vanished castle built by the important young visitors just before they went away

The case was heard by Mr. R. The defendant preferred to make a statement from the dock and later called his uncle.
He denied that he had assisted in
kidnapping the old man. He was former school teacher at the village where the old man lived and was his clauaman. In the early part of 1928 and on the occasion of the Ching Ming Festival the defendant asked the complainant to render an account of the Ancestral Funds. The old man flatly refused to do so, and since that time they had had repeated quarrels over the matter. Later the defendant left the village and went to Annam where he found employment in a Sack Factory. After staying there about four months he returned to the village en receipt of a letter informing him of his mother's illness. Defendant said that the charge was a trumped up one and that it was made against him in consequence of the dispute over the Ancestral Fund He asked his Worship to investigate the case thoroughly as complainant had paid money to the Canton Authorities for his extradition sad execution:
