CHANG TSUNG CHANG'S FURTHER SUCCESSES.

FENGTIEN TROOPS, DRIVEN BACK,

MORE REPORTS OF DISCONTENT AMONG THE LEADERS.

PEI CHUNG HSI AS SPECTATOR.

Chang Tsung Chang, fighting with the courage of despair, is clearly causing great trouble to Chang Hsueh Liang and his Feng; tien army. The, success of the Chihli-Shantung remnants on Sep- tember 15th appears to have been considerable, and, though Chang Hsuch Liang telegraphed urgently to General Yang Yu Ting for reinforcements, the Fengtiënese have apparently been unable to re gain this lost ground.

It is rumoured even that one of the Fengtienese Generals, Hu Yu Kwan, who was in charge at the front, has been captured by the Shantung troops. Eengtienesa reports on the other hand make light of the reverse, which is stated to be unimportant, while no doubts are entertained of the ability of Chang Hsueh Liang's forces to deal with the situation.

There continue, however, to be ominous reports of discontent and quarrelling among the 'Fengtien lenders, and it is said that some of them are favourably disposed to Chang Tsung Chang.

General Pei Chung Hsi is taking no part in the present fighting, but his forces are drawn up along the west bank of the Luanho river and he is ready to attack if necessary.

Chang Hsuch Liang has, however, requested him not to do so, stating that he is perfectly capable of settling with Chang Trung Chang by himself.
