PAINFUL SCENE AT INQUEST ON CHINESE GIRL.
MARRIAGE" CEREMONY AT WHICH
WAS ABSENT.
BRIDEGROOM "
MOTHER'S ACCUSATIONS AGAINST
SANITARY INSPECTOR'S
"HOUSEKEEPER.
Kipling's well-worn lines "p
is East and West, is West, and never the twain shall meet," must have been present in several mind, during the lengthy inquest proceedings at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday. Mr. W. Schofield, sitting as Coroner, and "a jury, were investigating the tragic circumstances of the death of a young Chinese girl, who threw herself into the road from the roof of Sanitary Inspector Lamprill's house, No. 17, Waterloo Road, on July 27th."
The young girl, Chan Mei Chun, had been living with Police Sergeant Hayward. She frequently visited. Inspector Lamprill's house-keeper, who is also of Chinese nationality, and it".
was in the latter's house that she met Sergt. Hayward. The house-keeper, That Eu, was alleged to have acted as a go-between, or match-maker, and as a result of her negotiations the deceased went to live with. Sergt.
Hayward..
A PECULIAR "MARRIAGE” CEREMONY.
It was stated in evidence that Sergt. Hayward paid $150 to the deceased's parents for the girl, and that some sort of marriage ceremony was gone through. It consisted of a tour round Kow- loon in a motor car in which Sergt. Hayward took no part. The parents of the girl to conform with Chinese custom spent part of the money given to them by. Sergt. Hayward on cakes and roasted pork for distribution among their friends and relatives. Insp. Lampril's house-keeper also sent betel nuts, fruits, etc., on the morning of the auspicious day," so as to show the world "in general that the deceased, Mel Chun, was honourably and truly
given, away in marriage.
*.
After "a few months, Mei Chun found herself pregnant. The mother alleged that Teat Ku, house-keeper to Insp. Lamprill, told the deceased that if she gave birth to a child, Sergt. Hayward would lose bis job, and had therefore advised the deceased to take a certain kind of red pills, green pea boiled in water, and musk." The deceased was said to have done so, and her mother asked in Court yesterday, "Why should Tsat Ku adviso my daughter to practise abortion?"
Both the father and mother of the deceased girl' alleged that Tane Ku was responsible for Mei Chun's death. She had a guilty conscience, they said, because when asked to stand beside the corpse at the mortuary and make a declaration that she did not in any way cause her death, Tsat Ku refused...
The deceased's mother averted that if Tsat Eu had made the declaration in the manner suggested she would not have asked. for an inquiry.
THE MOTHER'S EMOTION.
Long before the Court opened the mother of the unfortunate girl was is Court with her husband and son She was looking at the photograph of her daughter and was reeping bitterly.
Witness then added that she con- soled the deceased as best she could, saying that it was a triffing matter and that she must not take it so seriously."Why you have” some-- one to support you, and look at the beggars in the "treets. They have no one to look after them and yet they do not wish to die.”
Bow With Hayward. Witness went on to say that about two weeks later, she received nas other visit from deceased · at. - 8.
