CANTON

STRAITS & SALOUTTA...

Caro, August 5th. dawn yesterday the two: halves of the great fonting dock which are on their way from the TIENTSIN Tyne to Singapore slowly left their berth near the statue of De Lesseps and, towed by 10 powerful tugs, BANDAKAN entered the narrow waters of the Suez Canal,

size, the two portions of the docks. the fact that, despite their vast tower so high above the water that

moderate wind would be suffi course, and the slightest error of cient to drive them from their judgment might lead to the stop- page of the tens of thousands of tons of shipping which pass daily through the canal.

Canal Widened.

To allow the dock to pass, all the buoys along the 87 miles of the canal had been removed, and also all the dredgers, which have to. work incessantly to prevent silting in the channel.

The first stage of the canal journey, that to Kantara, was ac complished without the slightest mishap, and there the dock remain- ed for the night. It was to leave there at dawn this morning for Ismailia, where it is due to arrive this evening.

The canal was specially widened. at Kantara to allow shipping to pass during the night, for traffic is being held up only during the actual passage of the dock-in the daytime for a period of 12 hours at a time.

At dawa to-morrow the "steel castles will continue their journey
