CONSIGNEE NOTICES.

The tide is beginning to turn quits noticeably towards Fanling again and the entries for the bogey pool made a very fair showing, One rather gathered; from conver "aation and personal experience, that the extra quantity did not being with it arise in quality on Saturday, and both the winning retums were, I believe made on Sunday, which quay or may not have been a little cooler. Satur- day was undoubtedly one of the hotter days out there, and almost averyone seemed to wilt at some period in the round quite loan enough to make sure that the card would gat turn out too well.. Coo- sidering the heat and the compara; tiva lack of wind, the "surprising By five clear goals the Victoria thing was that soveral competitors Recreation Club "A" demon- put themselves in an almost hope-strated their superiority over their less position at the beginning, and "B" team in the Water Polo then, when they had got really warmed up, began to retrieve their lost holes with amasing vitality.

Very generous treatment is being meted out to the erring golfer at at the 10th at Fanling. Not only is the gear side of the hill being made a comparatively well regulat ed and covered slope from which long recovering shat should be far from impossible, but a large part of the far side has also been strip- ned and "

weeded" of rocks and atones. In a few weeks time now damaged clubs and paintless balls will be a thing of the past as far as this hill is concerned, and if only the concrete direction post were padded, the place would be safe for almost anyone. The turf, on which the success or failure of the schemo depends, has been laid dows in parts and looks as though it should serve its purpose well. I, however, it shows signs of growing long enough to conceal a ball, if will probably receive more. heartfelt maledictions than the stones ever gut, while it will also make it a very difficult shot to reach the fair. was unless one is a Hercules. If on the other hand it should decide to grow firm and close, the hole is going to become easier, and it does not really need any simplification. A great responsibility "reats upon that grass

With the approach of the Inter- ports, thoughts naturally turn to the, selection of teams, and one cannot help but regret that it is imp possible to get together our strongest aix. Shanghai would be hard put to it to beat, even on their. own course, such a collection as Marton. Shewan, Stewart, Fer- guson, Pendered and Andrewes, and with any luck one or other of them might well bave won the China championship. But, life

being what it is, it was almost in- evitable that some of our leading lights would be unable to go, and this at least widens the circle of interport players, which is an ex- cellent thing. One of the greater failings of go out here is that the clut match or its equivalent is almost non-existent, and in conse quence there is very little really serious gall played. There must be very low people who do not feel that the atmosphere at a club match or a championship is very different from that of a friendly round, and with most people this feeling of added importancs produces better golt. If only it were possible, which it obviously is not, to have frequent team matches, played more in enmity than friendship, the result would almost certainly be an ime provement in the standard of play in the Colony.

The Hong Kong team has not been completed yet, but at least ane or two things are settled. The captain of the team is A. H. Ferguson, and it is not likely that there will be any complaints about that. Marton too, I believe, is almost certain to go, so there should be no trouble about the top places in the team. Unfortunately, both. Stewart and Peodored have had to refaso definitely, so that the six will not be up to fulk strength. There are rumours of other refusals but this is all that is definitely known.

NEW RED WAR ON RELIGION.

ATHEIST TEACHING TO BE COMPULSORY.

A new war is being waged by the Soviet against Evangelists and Baptists who are officially stated to be gaining ground in Soviet Russia The Pravdu (July 8th) devotes two columas to reports of "religious success," heading these reports with the following state-

Referring to the Bible the Evangelista and Baptists are siandering the Party (Bolshe viks), the Communist youths and the Soviet Against the anti-Soviet work of the religious people we must in- crease our anti-religious front, we must mobilise the torces of our Soviet scientists, research institu tions and the general proletarián public.

In spite of the fact that Soviet schools ro anti-religious and no religious instruction whatever is permitted, the Pravda reports that even in Moscow, in the most Belehe ik quarter, known as the Sokol airy, more than $5 per cent of the school children were found to be believers in God, while in one school among 37 pupils who were leaving 20 declared their faith in God and in the Christian religion.

Of 831 pupils who have completed their course of instruction nearly 300 were believers. The Commissar of Education is to be censured for this neglect of atheism.

The Pravda has also discovered that in many villages in Russia the
