To keep well an individual must subject himself to periodic medical examinations by his family doctor. In America periodic examination bas made immerte strides and has done much to build up a healthy nation.

This was emphasised to a Daily Mail reporter" by Dr. Franklin Martin, President-of-the-Amèrican- College of Surgeons and of the Gorgan Institute of Tropical and Preventive Medicine, who is on a visit to this country in connection He with the Cancer-Congress. said:

Periodic examination in America began with the Tuber- culosis Association in 1905, when it was urged that everyone should have an examination at least once a year in order to forestall any development of tuberculosis. There are several other "philanthropic institutions "which have urged the same thing” with respect to other diseases,

including the American College DODWELL & CO., LTD

and the

Memorial Institute, and all have succeeded in interesting indus- tries so much that many of them now provide health examinations for their employees.

Sevenfold Increase. Industry has discovered that it is a financial asset to keep em- ployees well and thus save them from being absent from work and the cost of filling their positions temporarily. The great. Labour organisation of which Mr. Samuel Gompers was the bead and now succeeded by Mr. Green the Federation of Labour-has become interested in the periodic health examination, and has urged it for all men engaged in work.

Since 1990 the American in- surance societies have been press- ing it upon their policy holders, many of the larger companies paying for the examination. They realise that in keeping policy holders well they are ex- tending their lives and receiving a direct benefit.

It is estimated by the Gorgei Institute, after a careful survey, that there has been an increase of periodic health examinations in the United States and in Canada from a million in 1920 to '8,000,000 in 1927.

By this survey it was

revealed that in more than one-third of apparently healthy individuals there are physical defects or in- cipient diseases, many times un- suspected, which can be forestall ed by proper treatment and serious illness prevented. It has become recognised in America. by both the public and the phy- sicians that it is much better to pay for keeping well than to wait until a person is i" and then to pay heavily for it.

A Check On Cancer.

or

In America we educate the public through properly censor- ed articles in the newspapers and magazines, radio talks, BDE public addresses by physicians or other men in thorough sympathy with scientific medicine. We áll know that tuberculosis, cancer, many chronic kidney diseases, and many forms of heart disease, if discovered in their very early stages, can be prevented modified in their development.

In the United States one-sixth of our people die of cancer. Cancer curable only in its earlier stages. It is estimated that the death rate from cancer could be reduced by 30 per cent. if 50 per cent, of the individuals over 35 years of age the begin ning of the dangerous age for cancer received. examination It is for that reason that the Society far the Control of Can. cer in the United States urge every individual to have a fre quent audit of his physical con dition, in order that if cancer is discovered in its very early stages curative treatment may be applied.
