WEEK-END FREIGHT

RETURNS.

GOOD CARGOES REPORTED.

BRITISH SHIPS SHOW UP WELL.

The general cargo returns during the week-end were good, a moderate return for Saturday very well made up for the next day. British vessels were heaviest cargo carriers for the period endings.. yester- day. There were thirty fiva arrivals and thirty seven departures during the week-end which included a new British arrival, the Baron 'Larat.

Saturday's Figures. There were seventeen arrival, and sixteen departures for the period ending at a.m. on Saturday morn ing and the freights discharged for this port were fair. Through car- goes were good.

Sixteen vessels had 8,071 tons cargo of which 2,559 tons were coa tributed by-four British ships. The best carriers were the .. Shun Chik (Chinese) with 2,000 tons of rice from Saigon; and the s.8. Aut Sang (British) from Osaka and Kobe with 1,316 tons of general cargo.

Through freights amounted to 16,619, and of the four carriers two British ships had 3,005 tons. The beat returns were shown by the s.8. Tamba Maru from Nagoya and Shanghai with 3,310 tons of general cargo and the .s. President Harri- don (U.S.A.) from New York and Shanghai with 3,491 tons.

Yesterday's Returns, Yesterday's cargo returns showed a heavy increase over the previous day's figures, British ships being best cargo carriers for both Hong Kong and through ports. Eighteen arrivals and twenty-one departures were shown of which nine arrivals and nine departures were British ships.

Lecal imports from sixteen vessels showed a very good total of 20,793 tons. Eight British vessels con- tributed 10,068 tons. The s.s. Bing Hong (British) from Karatsu dis- charged 5,500 tons of coal, and the 3.5. Baron Lavat (the new "arrival) had '5,000 tons of coal for this part. Six vessels carried through freight of which four were British. The | four British vessels contributed 10,037 tons to the total of 15,594 tota of through cargo. The best return was that of the Blue Funnel liner Bellerophum (British) with a very heavy cargo of 8,903 tons from Birkenhead (Liverpool) and Singa- pare. The ss. Bellinghum (Ameri- cup) carried 4,357 tons of general cargo from Manile.

Captain Geo. Madden, the very popular master of the Hong Kong, Canton and Macao Steamboat Co.'s River steamer Lung Shan was the guest of honour at the farewell dinner party given by the com- pradore staff and ship's officers on Friday night after her arrival from Canton. Mrs. Madden and many friends were also present. 發

After Captain Madden had dock- ed the Lung Shaw for the last time before his leave, the members of the ship's company appeared on the bridge and presented him with a silver model of a Chinese junk; a gold cigarette case, carved ivory work, and numerous other small presents. In thanking his colleagues Captain Madden said: "I have never received so many presents be fore in my life."

Jollision Outside Swatow Harbour. The master of the 3.5., Hai Ning which arrived here on Saturday from Foochow and Swatow reports. that his ship collided with a junk just outside Swatow Harbour on August 11th.

Adiatio Deck Passengers. Seventeen vessels carried 3,683 Asiatic deck passengers for this pors during the week-end.

Alleged Deserters. Four Filipito 'seamen appeared before Major C. Willson at the Central Magistracy on Saturday morning as destitutes. They said that they were not told the hour of their ship's (5.8. Winamac British) departure and returned to. find that she had left the port. The Magistrate made an order for them to be detained in the House of Detention until the vessel's return which is expected here sometime this week.
