THE HONG KONG DAILY
A GREAT MOSCOW PLOT.
TO SMASH EMPIRE COM- MUNICATIONS.
MR. TOM WALSH'S DIS- CLOSURES.
RED WORK AMONG BRITISH SEAMEN,
The London Daily Mail, of June 29th features an account of a Mos- cow plot to strangle the transport communications of the British Em-
pire.
The details were contained in a letter written by Mr. Tom Walsh, the Australian Labour leader," to Mr. Havelock Wilson, founder and until recently president of the Sailors' and Firemen's Union,
It was the discovery of the Red plot and the gravity of the situa- "tion which Moscow men, backed by Moscow money, had created in the Australian ports that compelled Mr. Walsh to rever his association with labour extremists.
וי
Mr. Walsh was for many years the stormy petrel of Australian labour, and both he and his wife, who was Miss Adela Pankhurst, have been notorious for their ex- tremist views.
Mr. Walsh shows that the Inter- national Seamen's Club, recently founded in Sydney, is financed by Moscow, and he describes how its emissaries are working among the crews of British ships.
Red Gold Freely Used. The following is the text of Mr. Waleb's letter to Mr. Wilson, dated
PRESS, TUESDAY, JULY 24th, 1928.
The following is one of Soviet CONSIGNEE NOTICES. Rusain's orders which have been issued here;
In all countries where, in con- sequence of martial law or excep tional laws, the Communists are unable to carry out their work lawfully, a combination of law. ful and illegal work is absolute- ly necessary; The class struggla in nearly all countries of Europe Motor Vensel and America is entering upon the phase of civil war. Under such conditions, the Communists can- not have any confidence in the bourgeoisie laws.

The political interests of the Soviet

Bahore in Sydney. There is also
ä movement on foot to open branches of the club at the other ports in Australia.
There is no doubt at all in my mind as to the source of income out of which the clab maintains itself and extends its organisa- tion. The Red International has a call upon the £700,000 per an num which the Moscow people de rate to foreign, propaganda, or, to put it in better terms, 'for the furtherance of Russian pro- paganda in countries outside Russia."
I see in it 'the inevitable inter- ruption, if not the actual dia. integration, of England's com- munication with the Dominions.
Their immediate aim is to make it impossible for England to maintain her communications uninterrupted.
I also refuse to stand by and see Australian- and British sea- mea used as the tools to further the political objectives of the people sponsoring the Inter- national Seamen's Club. Having decided to take a stand against such subversive doctrines, it was inevitable that I ahould be singled out for attack.
What Should Be Done, Steps should be taken in Australia to establish some centre to which British seamen could re- sort outside the International Seamen's Club, and where they could obtain advice, and, if neces- sary, assistance, and so help to keep them clear of the blandish- ments of the Moscow Communists. The great pity, se far as the Labour movement is .con- cerned, is that the party spokes- men will not develop the courage to repudiate the Reds and fight the Communists to a standstill.
4
The success the Communists have met with up to now is not due to their superior ability or knowledge; it is due entirely to the fact that they are getting all the financial support they re- quire, and this enables them to maintain their organisations and participate in the affairs of mest of the industrial unions.
The nucleus of Coinmunism has established itself in the transport industry, and the propagation of the doctrines of the International Seafarers' clubs throughout the world generally, but in the British Empire particularly. That is the sole reason for the establishment of this club in <Australia.
