HOUSE OF COMMONS, June 29th, There is usually noticeable in our debates a sweet harmony among the women members, writes the Daily Mail Parliamentary correspondent Lady Astor coos at Miss Wilkinson, and Miss Bondfield has never been known to attack the Duchess" of Atholl.
Miss Susan Lawrence purrs to her own sex and Mrs Philipson leans forward and smiles sweetly when any other woman is address ing the House.
SHAREHOLDERS CHEERS,
LONDON, June 30th. Gentlemen, I tell you the gold is there." (Loud cheers)
The speaker was Sir Olori Atta, paramount chief of Akim Abuakwa, | on the Gold Coast, and company director. He was addressing the shareholders of Akim Ltd., a gold and diamond company, at Winches- ter House, Old Broad Street, E.C.
Sir Ofori was two hours late, having been delayed at Eayes, Middlesex, where he was, making a gramophone record. So the meet- ing re-elected him a director and adjourned until he arrived. Within a few minutes the meeting was Altogether our eight women mem-glowing with optimism, for Sir vers, irrespective of political party, Ofori, wearing his crown of beaten have been ↓ very pleasant ten gold and attended by his retinue, party, pledged to rally to each made a model company director's other's defence against an offensive speech in excellent English; masculine, assembly.
To-day the House observed with astonishment a very distinct rift in this lute. There were words" between Miss Wilkinson and Mre. Philipson!
The House was debating the Shops (Hours of Closing) Bill on its emergence from committee. This is the measure which does away with some only of the pettifogging restrictions of D.O.R.Á. and per mits sweets and tobacco to be sold in theatres and licensed houses after the general closing hour of
8 p.m.
Mr. J. Stewart (Soc., Glasgow) moved the omission of a clause which permits the later opening of confectionery shops and ice-cream parlours and Miss Wilkinson (Soc., Middlesbrough), who supported him, suggested that the clause, if allowed to stand, would mean that women might be kept at work for 100 hours a week.
"I want,'
t," she said, "to appeal particularly to Mrs. Philipson, who has specially identified herself with increasing the Hours of shop azsistants-for what reason I can- not understand."
Mrs Philipson (C., Berwick-on- Tweed), quivering body of indig. nation in black, rose to protest. "I have never,' she said," been in favour of increasing the hours of shop assistants, but I have been concerted for the ex-Service men and women who won't fight for their individual selves. I under- atand that Miss Wilkinson is speak ing of girls employed in chocolate factories.
J
"No, ro," said Miss Wilkinson, shaking her red, bobbed hair in im- mense annoyance. Mrs. Philip- son's remarks show the appalling state of muddle-headedness which she has been in ever since the be- ginning of the committee.
A sort of delighted awe settled on male members, and none was at first disposed to take sides in the dispute. but eventually Dr. Shiels (Soc., Edinburgh), with the lati- tude customarily allowed to' medi- cal men, mentioned that it would be in the interests of the community if fewer sweets were eaten uiter
8 p.m.
Mr. Hore Belitha (Lib., Ply mouth) said that according to Miss Wilkinson's contention the rail- ways ought to close at 8 o'clock.
This emerity nearly reunited the ladies.
"Railwaymen work in shifts," interrupted Miss Wilkinson.
After apologising for his lateness. he delivered an impressive aurvey of the company's prospects. He showed a complete familiarity with the phraseology of the City. He re- called when gold currency in his State gave its name to the Gold Coast, and added:
Apart from gold we have din monds Luckily for you, when the lease was being prepared I did not occupy the stool (throne) and I did not know there were, dia monds. So you can take them Away without paying for them, (Lord cheers and Laughter.) It would not surprise me if you struck a diamond field.
Plenty Of Gold.
So far as the gold is concerned, if I had not assured myself the richness of the wild not have codselited to become a director. I would have contented myself with granting the lease and drawing the rents.
In any undertaking of this kind it requires very great care on your part in sending the right men to my country, men who will work heart, and soul for the company, and at the same time will know how to work with the African.
You may call the African primi- tive, but he knows what he is about, and if he is treated with contempt and regarded as an in- ferior you will be doubling your difficulties.
The shareholders crowded round Sir Ofori at the finish, shook his hand, asked for his autograph, and gave him three cheers,

CONSTANTINOPLE. During the Persian Colony's penitential ceremonies of the Tenth Mouharrem in Constantinople a group of penitents revived the custom of lacerating their bodies with knives.
This form of religious ordeal had been suppressed by the Turkish authorities several years ago.
The police intervened, arresting several men who had severely mutilated themselves in their ecstasy of faith."
Speed Types.
Italy, for instance, shows some very striking examples of aircraft.
There is, Arst of all, an aero- plane of the type in which Major de Bernhardi broke the world speed record with 318 endles an hour.
Another Italian exhibit is a Savoia of the type now being em- played by Bignor Maddelena in the relief of General Nobile's Polar ex- edition. There is another of the same type as that in which General De Pinedo made his Southern Atlantic crossing.
Among the French aeroplanes is the famous Breguet, in which Captains Costes and Le Brix mede their recent South Atlantic crossing and their record flight home, from. Tokyo, and also a new 20-seater Farman aeroplane, the giant of the show.
