CROWDS CHEER

MRS. PACE.

SEND-OFF TO PRISON.

KISSES THROWN TO BABY.

Cheering crowds demonstrated outside Coleford Palice Court as Mrs. Beatrice Pace, the 36-years- old widow who is accused of poison- ing her husband, left at the end of the day's proceedings.

People who had gathered from all parts of the Forest of Dean lined the pavements and formed an Avenue for the car which was taking her to Cardiff Prison,

As it passed, with Mrs. Pace in charge of two women prison officers

inside, someone shouted, "Now for it!" Immediately a road of cheer ing rose from the crowd, men waving their hats and women their handkerchiefs.

Standing in front of the throng was woman neighbour of Mrs. Pace, holding aloft the widow's ailing 10-month-old baby. As soon as she saw her child Mrs Pace sprang from between the wardresses to the window" of the motor-car, and, leaning far out, threw kiss after kiss to the baby and the cheering spectators.

The cheers were prolonged until the car disappeared from view, Mrs. Pace all the time waved back or raised her fingers to her lipa.

Son's Court Greeting. The Crown called as a witness Leslie. Mrs. Pace's nine-years-old kon, to describe the circumstances in which his father ordered him to bring a box containing poisonous sheep medicines to his sick room..

FATHER ORDAINED AT WIFE'S CONVENT.

Bincix, June 3rd,

A family of monks and nuns father, mother, son and two daugh- ters-met in the Church of Saint Hildegardes, Ruedesheim, pester-

ordained the father a priest. day when the Bishop of Limburg

EL

It would be hard to find parallel to the history of this family in modern, or even in medieval, times.

}}

The father was headmaster of the famous school in the Castle of Bedburg, near Cologne. Hisconty son became a Benedictine monk in the Abbey of Maria Lanch. One of his daughters took the rei in a convent of teaching sisters in Luxembourg, and the other became & Benedictine nun in the Abbey of Saint Hildegardes.

31

The parents decided to follow their children's example, and the father became a novice in a Frap- ciscan friary and the mother a novice in the Benedictine Abbey in which her daughter was a nun. If either of them had found the life too difficult and had left, the cloister the other would also have had to return to secular life.

As it is, both persevered, and the ordination of the husband was in the church of his wife's convent, so that they could be united in that supreme moment. And with them knelt the son and the daughters whose example had inspired them.

11

The boy said his father pulled the books off the top of the box, and when he found the package he did not appear to look for anything

"Hallo, mum," whispered the freckled, sunny featured boy as he passed the dock. His mother smiled and made a movement as if she would like to lean forward to emmere. brace him.

Seated on a chair in front of the witness-box and swinging his legs, Leslie told his story without hesitation or faltering voice. He bowed gravely when the chairman, Mr, T. Deaken, congratulated him on his fuchey.

His testimony ended, Leslie sprong eagerly from his chair and went towards the dock the rail of which was a fort above his head. Mrs. Pace was bending forward as if ready to greet and kiss him, when a policeman diverted the boy's pro- gress towards the door.

Mrs. Pace, with a mother's smile of affection, watched him until he passed outside. Then she was over. come by a paroxysm of convulsivo sobbing.

Losile Face's Evidence.

Leslie, a bright, cheeriul boy, was addressed by the venerable Chair. man as my little man." He is so very small that his head was. only a little higher than the back of the low chair on which he sat.

"You remember last year," said Mr. G. R. Paling (for the prosecu. tion), your" father dipping some lambs. Who helped him?'

**Mam," he replied. "They dipped the lambs in the dolly tub," he went on the one mother used to wash the clothes in. That was at the trees down by the railway line."

The boy went on to relate that some of the dip was left over, and this was screwed into a piece of paper by his father and placed in what was called the sheep box That was kept in the kitchen cup board. When his father came out of hospital, said Leslie, he took the sleep box up to him, and his father while in bed looked, through the box, from which he took a small packet and told him to put it in a drawer in his bedroom.

A wooden box was then brought

Did you see any bottles in the box then No, sin

L

Do you remember the chest of drawers Had y fficulty in opening the drawer-Note.

The boy also stated that he was not able to reach the sheep box by standing on the ground, so he stood on the arm of the sofa and thus reached it.
