The Colonial Treasurer's report on the Trade Loan shows that in terest ia arrears on December 31st, 1928, amounted to $117,360.42. By December 31st, 1927, this had in- creased to $208,818.4.
The total number of loans issued was 279. Of these 32 were redeem ed in 1928 and 8 in 1927, leaving 184 outstanding at the end of last year.
The fourth annual meeting of the Hong Kong Tug & Lighter Co.. Ltd, yesterday was enlivened by some outspoken remarks on the part of one of the shareholders,
Croucher. Mr. N. V. A.
Mr. Croucher said that the business appeared to be run for the benefit of the directors and the general manager since their salaries made the biggest item on the accounts. He suggested that the directors should forego their fees until the business was paying better, or if they were unwilling to do so other directors should be appointed.
Captain A. W. Best who endorsed Mr. Croucher's opinions was heard, somewhat indistinctly, to give a ecries of reminiscences."

The loans obtained in London by the Hong Kong Government for the purpose of lending money to the merchants amounted to £1,800,000. A sum of £400,000 was repaid in 1993, and £80,000 in 1927, leaving £800,000 still outstanding.
The total of loans issued in Hong Kong from November 16th, 1995, on the security of mortgages was 15,824.598.46. During 1998 a gu
was repaid and $4,845,879.78 in 1997, leaving a total outstanding at the end of the year of 88,173,778.70.
Of this amount $70,553.70 was written off as irrecoverable, so that the net amount outstanding was 28,102,895. There was an overdraft with the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank on. Trade Loan account of 27,638,670.68 on December 31st, 1997.

SHANGHAI PUBLIC SCHOOLBOYS.
TAUGHT BY SHAFORCE.
Three, members of the Shaforce were asked to see what they could do with three dozen Chinese in the way of music. They were tickled but undertook the work. That was only a few months ago. Now, they have produced a regular Drum and File Band consisting of young pupils of the S.M.C. Public School for Chinese."
This is the first Drum and File Band of Chinese schoolboys in China, certainly the first organiza- tion of its kind instructed and trained according to the rules of the British Army.
The School boasted of a band in the days when the pupils still wore queues and played football with Chinese woollen shoes ten times as heavy as the ball itself. People used to wonder why the sons of respectable
