TO-DAY'S MATCH."

On the Hong Kong Cricket Club courts to-day, the Chinese Recrea tion Club will meet the Home Club in the "A" Division. The result will have an important bearing on the League Table, as the successful Club is expected to win the Shield.

NEW POST FOR A WOMAN BOOKMAKER.

TO BE DIRECTOR OF A GREAT FIRM.

Mra. Helen Vernet, England's boly woman bookmaker, who long ago staggered her friends by taking her place on the race-course and shouting the odds, has been elected a director of Ladbroke's, the most important firm of turf commission agents in the world.

The records, of Ladbroke's may be said to constitute another ver- sion of Debrett, their clientele is so representative of the great Zamilies of Eagland.

Mrs Vernet's appearance is totally unlike that which one woul expect a woman bookmaker to be. Bhe is alimly built, graceful, white-haired, and blue-eyed, with a girlish complexion, and a flair for good dressing. She combines an old-world charm of manner with the modernity of outlook that caus ed her to become the first woman bookmaker fifteen years ago. Her secret of success is given in her own words.

"It may sound conceited; but I just say to myself, Helen, what some one else can do you can do, and I go ahead with the job, what ever it may be, and somehow or other I get through."
