CHANGING RELIGION.

THE MODERN, VIEW OF MIRACLES.

EVOLUTION. BUT NOT FATALISM.

THE CATASTROPHIC PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY.

While Churchmeh are wrangling about words and phrases and details of ritual, which no doubt may involve important questions in principle, few have realised that a more momentous change is in progress Modernist victory at the expense of both the old parties in the Church, writes the Very Rev. W. R. Inge, D.D., Dean of St. Paul's, in the Evening Standard.

It is tacitly admitted that the old men feel themselves threatened "in argument from miracle and pre-their souls by a mechanical theory can no longer be used. I which seems not only to deny human phecy do not mean that a clergyman may fiberty but to make the order of stand in the pulpit and proclaim the world blind and irrational, they that he does not accept the miracles find a satisfaction in believing that in the Creeds; but when a young the maker of the clock sometimes man tells his Bishop that his belief jogs it or moves the hands... This is one of the changes which have come about silently and gradually. The centre of gravity in religious belief has shifted very considerably, and the Church is accepting the change.

The word supernatural · does not occur in the Bible. Nature is

contrasted not with supernature but with spirit. The spiritual world differs from the natural in that it is invisible, eternal, above the forms of time and space. We could not speak of the spiritual suspending the laws of the natural, for in one sense the two are too closely asso- ciated, and in another sense too far apart.

Miracles As Evidence, When Whichcote, the Cambridge Platonist of the seventeenth cea- tury, said to his opponent, "Sir, I oppose not rational to spiritual, for spiritual is most rational," he is claiming the identity of the divine law in the visible and invisible worlds; when St. Paul says that that which is spiritual comes after that which is natural, he means that there is an order of development, which brings us through nature to spirit, through the world to Ged. This is quite different from the cray- ing for signs and wonders which Christ rebuked. "A faithless and stubborn generation seeketh after a sign; there shall no sign be given to this generation."

there are still a few gaps in which he may take refuge. It is an up wise notion. Those who take refuge in gaps find themselves in a tight place when the gaps begin to close.

No one says dogmatically that miracles are impossible; that is more than anyone can know. But whereas in the dark ages it was considered the most natural ex- planation of a strange occurrence to assume that it was a miracle, we now expect to find either that it was not a miracle or that it did not happen. We do not call tele- graphs, telephones, and broadcast ing miraculous, though they would have acemed so two hundred years ago; they are not miraculous, be- cause their mechanism is under. stood. If something appareatly in- explicable happens, we assume that there is a natural explanation, and sooner or later we find it. If we' could be assured that there is no natural explanation, we should con- clude that since the strange pheno- menon cannot be fitted into the course of events, it differs from all other events in being entirely us important. We should not trouble ourselves much about a meteor which crossed the earth's orbit and vanished for ever into space,

The idea of miracle as evidence for religious truth, and the desire for such evidence, are characteristic of minds at a certain stage of edu- cation. In primitive societies such evidence, though it is readily re- ceived, makes but a small impres-

[THROWOH REUTER'S AGÈNCY.]

LONDON, June 13th. A sensation was caused at the Law Courts this morning, the closing day of the official enquiry into the interrogation of Miss Irene Savidgs at Scotland Yard, when Mr. Lees Smith, the Labour M.P., who is sitting on the Tribunal with Sir Eldon Bankes and Mr. J. J. Withers, read extracts from the diary of Sergeant Chambers, of the New Southgate Police Station.

Miss Lecs Smith had previously police diaries of the officers con requested the production of the nected with the ease, and the ex tracts created considerable surprise,

Remarking on the attack on the organisation of Scot- land Yard, Mr. Birkett said that a blow struck at the Police was a blow struck at the whole fabric of the State.

Intolerable Outrage.

Sir Patrick Hastings, K.C., "for Miss Saridge, declared that a system which permitted an exami uation like that which Miss Savidge was forced to undergo at Scotiand Yard was absolutely intolerable.

The mere method by which she was taken to Scotland Yard was an outrage.

Sir Patrick invited the Tribunal to say that Miss Savidge's story "true of the interrogation "was a account of an episode in her life, which, unfortunately for her, was now turned into a great public ad.
