TEACHING TRADES TO STREET WÄIFS.

'NIL DESPERANDUM" THE FATHERS' MOTTO.

[Br C.L.C.]

Even in the most prosperous community we have the poor with us, and while we may not be too sympathetic with grown-up mer- dicants, very few of us can turn a deal ear to the little street arabs that run after our ricksha whining for a cent or two.

We also often read in the papera of boys about twelve or fourteen years of age being charged with snatching and picking pockets, and that the Law, as a corrective measure, orders them to receive twelve strokes of the birch. The boys are allowed to go and very often they return to their old ways and become habitual criminals.

FOR COSTS,

Mr. Watamal Boolehand, through his solicitor Mr. L. D. Turner, sued the Dollar Steamship Line yester day at the Summary Court, before Mr. P. Jacks (Acting Puiane Judge), for the recovery of 8581.23. The defendants were represented by Mr. G. S. Hugh Jones.

The following article describes a very fine work that is going on in our midst, and turning a lot of human driftwood into useful members of the community. Most of us look upon the street waif and potty offender merely as nuisance. We call them incor- rigibles, but very few of us take the trouble to look into their case a little further. While it is ad- mitted that there are boys who are naturally criminal and incurable many drift into crime for the sake of getting a livelihood. Hanger knows no law.

Some of these lads are orphans and entirely on their own.

Their circumstances compel them to as- sociate with men of the vagabond type, and the influence which thean men exercise over them can well be imagined.

Criminals, the best modern opinion now holds, are far less often barn than made by circumstances espe- cially if they ara cast adrift on the world at a tender age.

Men like the Salesian Fathers who have devoted their lives to making useful men out of waits and strays

whom they have found in their midst, are firmly convinced that this is the case. They know that many thousands of boys have gone to ruin for lack of a proper home where not only roof over their heads and two meals a day are provided but where they receive sympathy and guidance and can learn a useful trade.

The Salesian Fathers have found

ed homes for orphans all over the world. At the present moment there are 80,000 fathers of this denomination engaged in this work.

Mr. Turner argued that that pro- cedure could not be applied to the paintiff in this action.
