"You know, it is a marvel in organization how a fleet of 17 immense President Liners can be handled with such efficiency and positive dependability! One week a President sails for... Victoria, B. C. and Seattle via the Short Route, and the next week one to San Francisco and Los Angeles via Honolulu. Every two weeks a President sails for the Straits, Colombo, via Suez to the Mediterranean, direct to New York, Boston and California. And every few days one of them sails Interport. That's what I call real steamship service.”

Women fighting for honour provided a thrilling battle at the inquiry into the allegations mach against the Rev. Oswald Ernest Hayden, the Rector of Aven- ing, Gloucestershire.

As a display of feminine tempera ments and as a clash of 'feminino wit no more dramatic spectacie per- hap's has ever been seen in a law court or staged in the theatre.

The rector had been charged on several counts. These include alle- gations of impropriety between him and Miss Nina Chipp, a school- mistress, and another of improper conduct towards Miss Winifred Lilian Sharpe, a parishioner, The last charge was added to the in- dictment on the eve of the court, and was specified for the first time.

Women Predominate. The court was convened at the request of the Bishop of Gloucester, to whom it will report. It met in the local Shire Hall, a lofty but sombre room with few of the appur- tenances of a court of law. The at- mosphere was solemn but informal The messors sat in row behind a low table. Counsel faced them at another table

Behind counsel sat Col. Ricardo,

the principal complainant, a tall, white-haired, soldierly man; the rector, red-faced and jolly-locking, who most of the time listened with his chin in his hands; his wife and Miss Chipp together, hand in hand," and 100 spectators.

Among these, women predominat- ed-women from Avening, who had comg-by-motor-conch to Gloucester," 17 miles away, and who smiled and whispered during the evidence; and women from Gloucester, unconcern. ed personally in the ease, who lined up in a queue for admission before

SHANGHAI DIVORCE CASE.

SHANGHAI, May 1st.

At His Britannic Majesty's Sup- reme Court, before His Honour Sir Peter Grain, a divorce, on the grounds of adultery, was granted to Mrs. Ludmilla, Liefman Cooper, Russian, from her husband, Herbert James Cooper, a British insurance agent.

Mrs. Cooper told the Court of her marriage to Mr. Cooper, at the British Consulate at Shanghai on July 6th, 1918. Owing to continued differences she left his home at No. 190, Boone Road, in 1923. Since that time they have been living separately.

Some time in December last, she and a friend, went to No. 103, Bubbling Well Road. On the notice board they saw Mr. Cooper's name, under room No. 14. The door was closed, so she knocked for admis sion, and on a man's voice bidding her enter, she and the friend went in.. Her husband was elad in pyjamas, and in the bed a woman was lying, with the covers drawn up all around her.

...2

Her husband was terribly embar rassed when he saw who the mid- night visitors were. He did not do anything, merely said that he was

The proceedings of the day pro vided a constant battle of wits bo- tween the mea counsel who asked questions, and the women witnesses who answered them.

Five women were the principal witnesses, two against and three for the rector. There was first Misa Sharpe, who opened the proceedings with sensational evidence.

Under cross-examination she ad- HAVRE.mitted that she never told anyone of this incident until this very day, and the suggestion of the defence made later was that, her mother having, it was alleged, died in an asylum she herself was imaginative and hysterical.

** Absolutely Innocent.”

The rector's evidence, given in clear tones; consisted of a complete denial of all the charges. "I am absolutely innocent, he declared emphatically.

He was followed by his wife, pleasant and still good-looking matron, tall and buxom, well dress ed in grey, with a serene and un: wrinkled "face, who with a calm smile gave her husband the highest of matrimonial certificates.

Miss Nina Chipp."-

The selection of the expert resta entirely in the hands of the governor general.. It is regarded likely that Governor Stimson will cable banker friends in New York to recommend a capable man for the job...

The matter of engaging an expert to examine the bank was suggested by Ben. F. Wright, insular auditor, previous to adoption of the resolu tion authorizing such a step.
