MR. THOMAS HARDY'S WILL.
ELLEN TERRY'S 80TH BIRTHDAY."
A TOUR OF THE BATTLEFIELDS "IN FRANCE.
.10,000 EX-SERVICE MEN
EXPECTED TO TAKE PART.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
LONDON, March 5th. : The will of Mr. Thomas Hardy has been proved at £3,000, which is more than most people expected. It contains a provision which con- veys a pleasant little legacy to the Jess opulent of his admirers and will at the same time help to spread his fame. He requested his execu tors to publish at a reasonable price an edition of his poetical works so that they should reneh the widest possible public.
This provision is applauded in a section of the Press; but there aro critics of another provision in the will by which he penalises his wife to the extent of half her income if she marries again. It is being said that Hardy more than any other writer, stands out in his writ ing as the champion of women, and this is true enough, because it will be asked who can read "Tess" and not feel that Yet in his own will and to his own wife he perpetuates what many have always felt to be one of the most little-minded" of testamentary dispositions. Point is lent to this criticism since as every one knows Hardy was twice mar
ried, and in cach marriage he found great happiness and great com panionship.
It is interesting to learn that the life of Hardy is to be written by his wife, who was formerly his secres tary Mre, Hardy has begun work on the book, and it is expected to bo published by the end of the year. He led a secluded and un- eventful life, and the subject seems to call for an intimate and domestic biography.
Ellen Terry.
. Congratulations and good wishes poured in on Dame Ellen Terry this week on her birthday. She is 80 years old, and is staying with Lady Mary Egerton at Maidstone. There was a proposal that the wonderful little lady should broadcast her birthday thanks to her millions of admirers by means of a microphone that was fitted up in the house, but her doctor' and A specialist con- sidered it inadvisable. No queen has ever commanded greater bomage
than Ellen Terry, and the tributes that are paid to her in the news papers have a ring of sincerity and deep affection beyond anything I have read for many years.
It is a pity that the broadcast message could not be delivered. A generation has grown up that has never seen her on the stage or heard the magic of her voice, which wa enchanting beyond any that, the British drama, has ever known. One writer truly, says that no actress. to-day even begins to be for play goers what Ellen Terry was for two whole generations of English play goers. The Daily Telegraph in a leading article writes of her career As the golden days of the stage," commiserates an unhappy genera. tion which only knows Irving's Lyceum by tradition, and states that other actresses may have had as rich e portion of the comic spirit and as a great command of the re- sources of their art, but the testi- mony of all sorts and conditions of men will put on the recard that ber acting had a beauty and a charra for which there was no like and no second.'
Mr. William O'Brien. Old political memories are stirred by the news that Mr. William O'Brien has died in London nursing home. For forty years he yas one of the most prominent of the Irish agitators, who inventou the Plan of Campaign and was the founder of the Land-League. The Plan of Campaign was a scheme to force the landlords to accept a

vitriolic, so that on nine occasions he was arrested and sent to prison. When the notorious O'Shea divores case caused the sensation of the period he pronounced against the Irish leader, and this no doubt helped to dethrone the "Uncrown- ed King'
of Ireland, as Parnell used to be called in those days.
It all seems ancient history now, like the records of a bye-gone age; and Mr. O'Brien bad lived to ser the rise of the Sinn Fein movement with the political consequences which are recent and familiar. He had nothing to do with this, and in fact bad lived in retirement for the last ten years near Mallow in County Cork, very happily married to the daughter of a Russian banker whom he met in Paris, and who brought him a comfortable fortune.

Ten Years After The War. Steps are being taken to enable ex-Servicemen and their 'women folk to visit the battlefields in France and Belgium next Summer. It is in the nature of a Pigrimage ten years after the war. Some of the areas where the most terrible. conflicts were waged are included p.m. in the itinerary; and it is fitting that the pilgrims will see many of the dignified and well-kept ceme teries in which lie gallant officers and men who died for King and Country. All the arrangements are being made by the British Legion in conjunction with the British Empire Service League, and the cost of the tour is made low enough to enable those who want to go to do so at an outlay of a few pounds.
