an increase in the CANTON
In comparing the total of the world merchant fects in 1914 with the latest available figures, it is pointed out that the gross tonnage of seagoing steal and iron steamers and motorships amounted in June, 1914, to. 42,514,000 tons, while as June, 1027, the figures reached 30,668,000 tons an increase of more than 17 million tons.
to
A remarkable change, it is added, has taken place in the total too nage of some types of vessels. The tankers, which in 1014 totalled 1,478,000 tons, now 5,916.000 tons; and motership, which in 1914 reached only 234,000 tons, now amount to 4,271,000 tons (including auxiliaries). A great change has also taken place in the relative use of coal and oil fuel far boilers. In 1914 the tonnage af the steamers fitted for oil fuel
wns 1,310,000 tons, while the 1927
figures show nearly 18 million tons.
