WHAT IS A "LIGHT"?
It is strange, myn The Light Car and Cyclecar, that in the new Road Transport Lighting Act there is no definition of a light Centuries ago, when householders were first required to hang out a lanthorn to light the streets on dark nights, the ordinance required that it should contain a candle of eight to the pound What quality of candie does the law now consider to be sufficienti Also, what, in law, is the purpose of a light? If it is merely to reveal the presence of a

THE RISE IN MOTORCYCLE PRICES.
The complaint has been raised time and again, and the problem has become so acute that dealing with it cannot be postponed much.

UNAUTHORIZED TRAFFIC
SIGNALS.
NOT ACCEPTED AS DEFENCE IN LAW ACTION.
Motorists often receive helpful signals from pedestrians at danger spots indicating that it is safe to Cross or turn. On several oc casions, however, The, Motor has warned its readers not to be too reliant upon such help, as these well-meaning people have no sort of authority and it is not safe al ways to rely implicitly upon their assistance.
For the first time, so far as we are aware, remarks The Motor, the question of a signal given by a pedestrian was raised recently as a point of law a case beard before Judge T. E. Haydon in the Stamford County Court. At any rate, the judge himself admitted that as a point of law it was new to him.
Statue Square which are compara tively deserted and which would serve well for parking places, but they are undoubtedly not so handy hs the entrance to the Star Ferry, or Chater Road, or Pedder Street. On the other hand, any of these roads is perfectly capable of accom- modating a single line of cars, standing lengthways down the centre, and this method, would also eliminate the greatent present cause of obstruction, the lengthy maneuvring in or out of the line.
Private Dars.
Any such rank in Chater Road or opposite the Post Office would, of course, do away with the parking of private cars in these streets, but on the other hand the provision of an A.A. patrol should already be a sufficient inducement to owners to leave their cars in Statue Square. Outside the Hong Kong Hotel, where chaos does not appear to be so pronounced, the parking area might continue to serve the needa of both private and publie vehicles, for the present at any rate.
An Alternative Suggestion, As an alternative suggestion Chater Rond might be converted into a one-way street for east bound traffic, while Pedder Street between Connaught Road and: Des Vœux Road Central is reserved for south- bound (ie., inland) trafic, Tais. scheme would seem to have several advantages without any very ap parent defects. A Move,
Since writing this the cars in the. been shenherded into order in two lower part of Pedder Street have lines, both pointing up towards 'Des Vaux Road Central, and ears are hired from the front in rotation. The only trouble now is that some cars drive down the rank and try to get into line without passing round the statue by Blake Pier, thus causing a certain amount of obstruc tion. It was also noticeable that several drivers, seeing that there would be two or three cars ahead of them, preferred to take their chance in Chater Road.
