LADY OWNER WINS

SECOND DAY'S RACING AT HAPPY VALLEY.

-RECORD-DIVIDEND OF $1,432.

SIX TICKETS ONLY. ON THE WINNER.

THREE CHINESE LADIES LEAD IN WINNERS OF

THE PEKING PLATE.

[BY RAPIER.]

Even racing has its good points. A vast concourse of people" such as were present at Happy Valley yesterday cannot fail to generate an atmosphere of confidence. Fides farit dem: The Chinese are very susceptible to mob paychology and the prevailing air of prosperity and good feeling is one that has not been felt so strongly since pre boycott days, To meet with triumph and disaster and treat these two 'impostors just the same" is the true- racing spirit and one that I believe to be very much in evidence -amongst us today.

Pretty, women, tastefully garbed, good weather, and racing. excellent music, food and drink with an occasional winner is surely suficient to enthum a little gladness-into" the heart of the mont confirmed misanthrope.

His Excellency the Governor, Sir Cecil Clementi and Lady Clementi were present, also H.E. Major-Generał Lward and `pro- minent representatives of both Services and the civilian community. The ecurse wat in an excellent state and with the exception of the second event the racing was always intéresting. Dividends were on the high side and in the last race Chatto ridden by Mr. Usher paid $1:432.50 for a win and 2260.20 for, a place. There was a field of £3 for this race" and the first three ponies past the. post were owned by Chinese,

THE DERBY.

The Derby was, of course, the chief event and nine ponies faced the starter. As a rule very few ponies turn out for these classic events, which is rather a pity in view of the fact that there are so many sweeps run in connection with them. Mrs. Dunbar's Sitting Bull (Maitland up) made no mistake about this race leav- ing Young Pretender six lengths away with New Year's Eve taking third place. It must be a good many years since a lady owner won the Derby and Mrs. Dunbar was the recipient of many congratulations. She is how all square with her husband whose pony annexed this last year.

The Peking Plate was won by Chinese owners and the three" Chinese ladier who led-in-the-successful--ponies-received an ovation.

THE RACING.

There was a field of nine for the Jockey Cup so there should be no shortage of riders during the forth-¦ coming extra Meetings, They wereį -rather-a-difficult-crowd-to-handle.

but Mr. Fiddes Wilson eventually. got them well away together. Mr. Loo rode a good race on Warlord ship to win by six lengths. He is one of the most modest riders and with a little more training and con- fidence he should turn out a firet cings jockey," "Warrington beat the favourite Captain by a neck for seconst place.

The Exchange Plate was a farce, Eliot Bay won as he liked and the other two ponies in the race were only sent, to collect place money. It is a pity that owners a not forced to declare the evening pre- vious to the races where they are starting their ponies.

|

The Derby was a very open race although Sitting Bull. was made rather a hot favourite. Peck dis appointed badly a's also did Novem- ber. It would have been interesting to see how Young Pretender would have got on had he been trained for this race. He was unfortunately shelved for Heir Apparent who | disappointed badly yesterday,

Maitland followed up his Derby Victory by winning the Subs. Challenge Cup in a field of a dozen. Erstwhile was two lengths away with Spinner not far behind.

Bengal last ran true to form in the Great Southern Stakes and bent Bokers Bay by 24 lengths with

Duke of Artagnan well behind.

The Lusitano Cup was won, as. I

expected, by Pickle. It is a very

fine cup and well worth fighting

for.

THE OLYMPIC GAMES. AMSTERDAM ROWING

COURSE CRITICISED.

TOO NARROW!

LONDON, Jan. 23th. European rowing authorities have expressed considerable dis- satisfaction with the Olympic boat racing course.

The prominent French sportsman Frantz Richel, who was an official at the Paris Olympic Games in. 1924, recently visited the Amster dam rowing course. He complain. ed hitterly of the narrowness of the strip of water and the lack of facilities.

In explaining their choice the committee have issued a circular letter, of which the following are extracts,

From & sporting point of view cleaner and more beautiful course could hardly be imagined, having still and clear water of a sufficient depth, and running in a beeline for a distance of two cilometres at a width of thirty eight metres, this enabling two. boats to have full freedom of move ment.

"The fact that only two hours. will be able to start at a time. naturally necessitates a larger number of heate than would be required on a broader course. Yet the rowers themselves as well as the public can only be pleased thereby, as the rowing in pairs ensures a most correct sporting. decision!

LONDON, Feb. 13.

It is expected that between twenty and thirty crews will par... ticipate in the rowing evente. An entry of sixteen or more on, a-two- boat course will make it necesary for the first and second orews row the full course four times.

There are seven events down for decision between August 6th and 10th. The most enthusiastic rowers, can hardly be expected to do justice to themselv, declare these authori- bien, if they have to pull four races. in five days.
