·TO-DAY'S RACES.

SOME EXCELLENT SPORT PROMISED.

OUR SELECTIONS.

IDY RAPIER.1

The annual race meeting of the Hong Kong Jockey Club opens. today at 12 noon and the sport provided will be of a high standard. The Club is becoming more cosmopolitan in, its character and the

Stewards are to be congratulated upon their enterprias-in-various directions more especially in holding sellings sweeps under the auspices of the Club in a place where all members can attend. Volunteer Headquarters is, of course, not the most comfortable rises, but unfortunately it is the only one available as the "Hong Kong Hotel and other licensed premises cannot be legally used for the purpose of selling sweeps,

The Clerk of the Course, Mr. G. C. Mackie, has done a lot of work in a quiet way, and he has been present at the course early every morning since bis arrival here. It is a pity he is not riding in the races as he is fit enough to hold his own with most rideńs and it would do no harm to revive a truly sporting spirit amongst taipena.

Mr. H. P. White continues to control the destinies of the Club and upon him rests all the responsibility and to him belongs all the honour and the glory arising out of its successful running He is leased with a sense of humour that covers a multitude of-(you're mistaken, dear reader)—people with confusion.

Mr. P. M. Hodgson will not, unfortunately, be fit enough to take over the position of starter as he is still in hospital, but I am pleased to say he is progressing favourably. His duties will devolve upon Mr. W. D. Fiddes Wilson and the latter will be a sisted by Major Hogg. It is the very dickens of a job, but Walter is a young man with a mind of his own and considerable experi- ence of riding and the ways of jockeys who have a tendency to follow the Macbethian precept "Stand not upon the order of your going but go at once," Confronted with a crowd of hostile jockeys and a "stand full of irate owners in your fate, me lad, but I have every confidence in your meeting it calmly and well.

The result of the first day's racing should strengthen one's Derby selections and I do not, therefore, propose dealing with this race until to-morrow,

There are 11 races to-dây, the most important being the "Valley Stakes." O'Moon is the best pony in the race and will be ridden by Mr. Wong. Apart from this pony the winning subs should be in the hands of Shanghai jockeys as they have tried most of thers, and chosen those they think are the best monata.

The first race will be the most uncertain in the day's pro- „pramate and anything may win. My selections are as follows:-

SAINT PETER'S CHURCH.

SUCCESSFUL YEAR REPORTED.

"GOOD"WORK BY THE YOUNG

MEN'S CLUB.

Members of the Congregation of St. Peter's Church held their annual meeting yesterday in the library of the Sailors Home (West Point) after the choral

Eucharist was celebrated.

An interesting report of the year's working was presented by the Hon. Secretary, Mr. G. W. R. Griggs. It read:

Since we mos last this Congrega- | tion has shown little outward change but a good deal of inward advancement. The past year's re- cord is bound up with the devoted work (done without remuneration) of few of the clergy, particularly the Rev. N. V. Halward. This period marks the growth of several organisations which were formed in connection with the Church,

The Ladies' Guild.

The Ladies' Guild formed a couple of year's ago, enjoyed a new lease of life, since Mies Pope (and lately Miss Mow Fung) took up the Secretaryship. Recently the Guild adopted the name of the Guild of Martha and Mary.

The Servara Gulid.

...

This guild started well, and ne the beginning of the year, members pet regularly for devotion and discussion. These meetings, how ever, were not maintained, and at present efforts are being made to- wards a revival.
