"ROSITÁ FORBES' OPINION.

NOT A BAD SOUL OF LIFE.

During the last ten years I have seen a good deal of the Legion in North Africa and in Cochin China,

and, I know the Druso country, where it is temporarily employed. writes Rosita Forbes, the famous woman explorer in the Evening Standard.

QUOTES. SHAKESPEARE IN

...THE STOKEHOLD.

A dramatic story of modern sen life was related to the Festminster Gazette recently by a well-known. Temple barrister who suffered a financial crisis three years ago, severed all his old connexions, tramped to Southampton with hardly a penny in his pocket, and

me; and fireman on coal-burning became, for over two years, a trim ships.

Its officers are dealing with very difficult material, for the Silent Legion, where no questions are asked, attracts four classes--refugees front war-wrecked principal Central Europe, excaped criminals, the down-and-out who have chance of a better job, and hot- This barrister had been briefed headed youths in search of adveniu notable lawsuits, had contested ture. In ore Moroccan fort I met An ex-Roman Catholic priest, an ex-Lutheran pastor, a German who had murdered his wife, an aircond ing Austrian banker, a Swiss pea sait convicted of theft, an ex- colonel of the Russian Imperial Guard, an ex-A.D.C. to a Serbian King, and a quantity of vague re volutionaries.

Proud Of Ita Becord. The Legion is not intended for men who can find easy or well-paid work, but it is intensely proud of its record as a fighting and march- ing unit, which is second to none. Its hard life, but it gives a chance to ang man who wants to see the world and doesn't mind roughing it, and its conditions are vonsideralily better than those

under which the Frenchman in a Senegalese or a Soudanese« bat- talion serves. The clothing and equipment, wherever I have secti it in Africa and Asin, is as good as that issued to the French Re- gulars. The allowance for food is Just sufficient, but it depends on the officer to see that none of it remains in the pockets of a cor- porel who may be of any or all nationalities.

A woman one served in the Lezion undiscovered for many years died of wounds received in actions and was buried at Figing, in Algerin, where her tombstone can still be seen. After that, if a man calls

too hard a life, itrust in because of what he has left be hind, not because of what he finds | Di Africa.

Englishmen are not particularly welcene in the Legion, because the standard of living is much higher with us than it is in the majority of European States; but no false promises are made. The pay is ind, 1 franc & contimes a day, with small additional allowances, but it is about the same as in the regular French army, and a bounty of 500 franes is given on the understand- ing of five years' service, at the end of which the majority re-enlist.

Allowances For Depression, Discipline is, of necessity, strict, bus there is much latitude in its enforcement. Every allowance is made for the cafard," that ap paiting depression which in Africa is trented as a disease. No man is posted as a deserter until he has been absent eight days without leave, except, of course, on active service, when (even under English martial law) he is liable to be shot. If he has deserted in tines of pence, his punishment is rarely ac tually administered, but held in reserve; it note as a deterrent to further aberrations. There are no small punishments in the Legion, unless one can count those fatigues invented by the malice of non-com- missioned officers, only half whom are French.

too little moral sense, is to make a re- primand go as far as possible, and after that to punish with much severity that the offence is not re- peated

Looking For Excitement.

In conclusion, I suggest that life in the Legion is tolerable for any one who is himself tolerant, and I would quote the opinion of a Stan Legionary as Bou Anane, which is one of those Moroccan frontier forte from which Mr. John Earvey imagines that no one re- turns! One had hoped for little excitement," he grumbled, caressing one of the 50 pet dogs belonging to his company," but the
