On the other band, opinions as to the best proportion to give the dance crowd evidently vary. At the Iles Borromées Hotel at Stresa? last September I found the Ameri- can-inspired band giving the cosmo politan crowd two quick foxtrots, “à “blues, two more foxtrots, a blues, a foxtrot, a waltz, then tango; no one ster, the foxtrot being quick encurah-to-satisfy the desire for rapid movement.
At the Rite in Paria the band thought a predominantly Anglo- American crowd preferred foxtrot blues tango, in that proportion. In start dance-restaurant in town the other night I found the star band "playing: foxtrot, foxtrot. blues, blues, one-step, waltz, foxtrot, foxtrot, blues. Then they retired while the string tango band struck up for ten minuten.

For the last four seasons bands have been quickening up the foxtrot until the dance public has split into two schools: those who like the quick time foxtrot which facilitates Charleston steps, and those who do not care for the Charleston rhythin and peppy movement but prefer the smooth old gliding textrot done to a time several bars a minute slower. Now the blues, lilting, graceful. languorous, and smiling as the a dozen different styles of hold, trommes, and the Company's Surveyors, southern sun of its home, has the face-to-face hold, with the man's turn to provide solution. It hand pressed to the girl's hip in. was the rage is fore the Charleston stead of encircling her waist, to was heard of here.. But make no mistake, despite the simplicity, of its steps it is not an ensy dance Perfest balance and poise are needed and that sense of time that comes only with practier. It is not what you do but the way you so it that counts,
Fashion Set By Society Dancers, It is the younger social set that make the dance, Fashions now. Their whins are law, and clubs and professional dancers and reademies, who used to dietate, unw observe And follow. Hence dances in the public and semi-p iblic places, BS in the private ball-rooms of the fashionable world, are much aborter. and everything is done to give the spice of variety.

But beat of all the new things I see and sense in the ballrooms thin winter is the subordination of dane- ing to the social pleasures. Enting, drinking, chatting, flirting, enjoy. ing the company and the occasion have re-established their supremacy. I need not to be so.
Foxtrotting
three seasons ago was a solemn affair, My partner became annoyed if I chatted and enraged if I upset the formal regularity of his step by laughter.
So fancy that dancing this season is going to be very gay.-- MAIDS STUART,
