The rejected Prayer-book measure is to be reintroduced in the Church Assembly with such changes, and such changes, only, as Ray tend to remove misapprehensions and to make clearer and more "explicit its intentions nad limitations. The full statement was as fol-

The rejection of the Prayer-book measure by a vote of the House of Commens has brought about. position of difficulty and anxiety in the life of the Church and natin. While exaggeration must avoided, and, there is certainly so ground for panic, it cannot be denied that the crisis is grave.

For two days the diocesan bishops have met at Lambeth, and we can record with thankfulness that the unity which marked our Jong liberaticas during the last two years his her maintained. It is impossible within a few days of the vote of the House of Commons to take a just insure of its signi- ficance nas to determine the obliga tions which it imposes on Church. At a time when in a special degree the well- being of the Church in this land for many generations may depend rn the things we do, or refrain from doing it is clear that self-have, restraint and self-sacrifice will be the truest proofs of loyalty, and enimness the highest form of courage.
During the holy season Christmas let po hasty words -ør acts disturbita prace, Let the voices of controversy be hushed. Let as enter upon a New Year fraught with issues so grave in the spirit of united prayer. In these happenings God-must-have-ame purpose for His Church. May we have humility and faith to discern it, strength and steadfastness to obey it.
Some word, however, of counsel and renssurance must at once be spoken. Accordingly with the con- sent of the bishops, and after full | consultation with them, we address this message to the Church.
It was within the night of the Ibuse of Commons to reject the masure. On the other hand, mere sequiescence in its decision would be, in our judgment, consistent with the responsibilities of the Church as spiritual society.
