rate war.

There has been apeculation in London as to the likelihood of a Bat we understand that this is by no means probable. It is much nearer the mark to predict that there will be a reduction of charges. The chief difficulty con- fronting the cable corapanies in respect of a great deal of the wire less competition now affecting them. is that the rival system is State supported. The British Post Office works the beam wireless between England, Australia, India, South Africa and Canada. The cablu companies would be strong enough Anally to engage in a rate cutting campaign if it were conducted by.. any ordinary commercial com. petitor. Their reserve funds total over £14,000,000, They have tech- nical and business knowledge ac quired as the result of many years experienc But they walise that it would be hopeless in the long run to fight against Governments The sensible course is to try to arrive at a working agreement; and this, as we have said, is now being done,

With regard to the future, share- holders in the cable companies should have no acension to feel unduly anxious. Everyone is ready to acknowledg the advantages of gireless telegraphy. But the system acks two opstanding advantages possessed by the submarine cable- that of secrecy and freedom from atmospheric interference We be lieve it may be regarded as certain that the maintenance of cable com- munication must be considered on the basis that it is of national concern; it is of supreme strategical importance to the Empire in war. There

is, room for the two systems. The cable

companies will lose the wimmmmling. position they have occupied through being in the possession of a monopoly, but as 3.95 they are directed by neuto business people they will doubtless adjust their methods to meet competition..

The new cable from Australia to Cocos transmits at the rate of 2.000 letters a minute compared with 000- in the old type of line. It is claim el that the newest designs have a canncity eight times that of the old;" and this should enable many large "conomies to be effected and rates to be lowered in consequence. The. outlook for the cable companies is, therefore, very far from desperate.

become. acute. The discovery of the bean system of wireless trans mission linking Great Britain and the Dominions has brought about a crisis. A few weeks ago the cable companies announced 1 fall in revenue; and the position is suf- ficiently serious to demand the opening af negotiations with the Government. Recently Mr. Barcz,

the Prime Minister of Australia,

A small fire which broke out on Tuesday afternoon at the Tak Chai Laundry, 118, Kennedy Road, caused damage, estimated at 8100. The cause of the putbreak has not heen

stated that 45 per cent of the usual wenny, Bridgend, Glamorgan-

traffic on the cables serving the Commonwealth has been diverted to beam wireleka; and it is no secret in well informed circles in London that the cable companies are losing a considerable amount of business. This discloses state of affairs, which compels attention if the older method of communication is to be maintained. As might be supposed, holders of stock in the cable com panics are somewhat concerned re- xarding the future. The Eastern recently deemed it desirable to issue Associated Telegraph Companies a statement that "in view of the regarding the fluctuations in market quotations of cable stocks, the pori- tion in relation to radio and cable services is under consideration te tween the Government and these companica. Therefore, development of these negolations

pending no further statement can be made at present."
