ALLEGED THEFT OF GAS BY COMPANY'S EMPLOYEE.

» COMPANY'S WORKING, SYSTEM DESCRIBED.

METER READERS AND THEIR DUTIES IN THEORY

AND PRACTICE.

· An interesting insight into the methods of the Hong Kong and China Gas Company was given yesterday in Court when Alvaro Antonio Remedios, a former clerk of the Company, was brought before Mr. R. E. Lindsell at the Central Magistracy on remand on a charge of the theft of gas and with making falso entries in his books.

Chinese meter readers who are assigned to their districts respectively, admitted in cross-examination that they exchanged district among each other without the knowledge of the Company. It was also admitted that in cases where they could not gain ad- " mission into a house of a consumer to read the dial, they would either enter the figures of the previous month, or make an assess- meat on past readings.

The defendant, it was alleged, by virtue of his position, had " kept the reading on his meter at 206 cubic feet from February, 1925, until in August of 1927, when it rose to 299. During all these months a nil entry had been made against his account. The defendant was alleged to have told the meter readers that he was not burning any gas, and asked them to enter the same figures as they stood.

Mr. Leo d'Almada is appearing for the defence, and the case for the prosecution is being conducted by Mr. R. A. Wadeson.

At yesterday's proceedings, a Chinese meter reader who had #iven evidence at the previous hearing was recalled for cross- examination by Mr. d'Almada, and

in reply to questions, he said that, he had been a meter reader since

1913.

Mr. d'Almada: And you are from time to time assigned to diferent districta 7-Yes.

Mr. d'Almada: It not infrequent ly happens that you and other meter readers arrange to change districts 1

Mr. d'Almada: Your duty is to read your meters strictly every month-Yes.

Mr. d'Almada: You make a note of your readings and report it to

Mr. d'Almada: So that the Com- pany only takes your readings and

Mr. d'Almada: If you, for in- stance, give the reading of a con- fumer as 1,000 cubic feet, the Com; pany would take that to be correct?

--Yes."

Mr. d'Almada: Mr. Remedios was also considered a consumer, was he not Yes.

Re-examined by Mr. Wadeson, witness said that in cases where he could not gain entry to a con sumer's house, the person he would; have had to report the matter to would have been the defendant.

Mr. Lindsell (to witness): Can you say in the past, two or three actually been on the defendant's years how many months you had district -Once in every four months.

Mr. Lindsell: Yes, but you just said that you sometimes "swop districts" with other readers 1-As far as I am concerned I have never "swopped districts."
