GERMANY TIRED OF MILITARISM?

AN AMERICAN VISITOR'S IMPRESSION OF DRESDEN.

WAR FACTORY NOW TURNED TO PRODUCTS OF PEACE.

DEESDEN.

Quite unexpectedly and impre meditatedly I stumbled into the Industria gelaende here in Dresden the great war munitions plant that now houses nearly a hundred small factories busy with the production of peace products. Perhaps the most encouraging and comforting spectacle to the wandering Outlander, and especial ly to the optimistic American who clings (almost fanatically) to his dream of a world at peace, is this,

city into an adjective for expres sings certain exquisite fragility, daintziness and archness. "And be sides, it makes glassware, metal, leather, stone wares that belong in the arts, artificial flowers and fruit, toys, jewellery, and excels in musical and scientific instrn- ments.

The former war manitions plant, landing itself to the heavier, har sher forms of manufacture, has be- come an auxiliary branch of Dres characteristic industries, den's,

among other things. making. machinery for use in Dresden fac- in Germany offering a modern vaxtaries, as well as many other Ar ticles for the common local use that alon of turning the award into a plowshare.

Welcome as it is, it is not a spectacle easy coins by, for it isn't featured. Yet it isn't hidden, Merely it is there-if you can find

it.

Operations Open To All, Even you may be conducted to it, it will be opened to you. For example, it is not listed in the sights-worth-seeing free literature that makes things easy for the tourist, along with the museums, castles, palaces, monuments, ruins, etc., of the tourist menu; but, at the same time, the Germans are not furtive about it. They are prae- tical, and their sentiments toward disarmament are determined by their social and political points of view by their self-interest, whe ther it is in enjoying the pay and picstige of an officer or in the re- lief of the labourer at getting the

Boldier off his back..

If, instead of coming haphazard upon this former great munitions platit, with its many big buildings, with plumes of smoke wreathing "out of ita tali chimneys," and streams of men and women workers hurrying through its gates, I had sought the usual formal admitance under official guidance, I could have seen it just as easily, but per haps less convincingly, for, accord- ing to the more or less sceptical newspaper point of view, one as- sumes that one is shown officially whatever the officials deem desir. able to be seen and admired.
