The book, which is full of good atories, is published by Hodder and Stoughton. Its 350 pages aro crammed with little cameos of prison life. Major Blake has met at one time or another 'London's greatest eriminals, and ja "Quod" he draws aside the curtain and in- troduces to the world the crook as he really is in gaol,
Miss Carrie Tubb.
Many celebrated artists have sung at the Ville," as Penton- ville Prison is called. Every Christmas Day for the last six years Miss Carrie Tubb has left her Areside to charm away the sad thoughts of happier Christmases from that, sombre audience at Pen-. tonville.
They fairly worship Miss, Tabb at the Ville, says Major Blake. One appreciative old "lag" once remarked, "It acems as if she took us all right up to 'eaven for an hour."

A queer character is Tammy Green. He has a record of some- thing like a hundred tonvictions and นอ ever-present sense grievance. As one of the mainstays of the prison system, Tommy cop siders himself entitled to consider able respect. He objects to being called Tommy, and once when the deputy governor listened to his usual grouse and said, “All right, Green,'
he snapped out, "Mr. Green, if you please.”
Major Blake saw many execu tions, and his stories of scaffold dramas are probably the most grip- ping narratives in the book.
"Scotty" was the first" man Major Blake escorted to the gal- lows at Pentonville, and he tells with graphic detail the heart agony be endured on the eve of Scotty's execution.
