Mr. C. "These pictures," Mr. da Roza continued, are of topical in terest and have been very favour ably commented upon by the press when shown recently at the Agricultural Show in Fanling, and we are extremely glad to have the opportunity to see them to day."
The Mutual Advantage Of All," Mr. Tredwell in addressing the meeting said that in most com munities persons were found who take the initiative in directing and Estimulating the interest of the public in enterprises which tend to promote the common welfare: This is especially true of Hong Kong," he continued, "Within the past ten days a group of men and women, well known to us for their earnest endeavours, have most suc- cessfully staged the first agricul- tural show ever held in this Calony. The show was a splendid example of how men and women of different races may combine freely to de dicate their talents and riches or the benefit of those who are tillers of the soil. This may easily and well be extended in other directions to the mutual advantage of all and a finer appreciation of each other's characteristica.

A certain liberty has been taken with historical fact in the scenes of the destruction of the city; the happenings of a week have been compressed into one night of terror, But the atmosphere is good, and the slowly gathering horror, fear, and confusion admirably suggested in a way that would not otherwise have been possible.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of all the big Italian films and indeed, those of other European countries, is the general standard of artistic excellence and the ab sence of vulgarity. No one can deny the skill of Griffiths, and there are people to whom his productions would appeal more, but there is a dignity and restraint which characterises these European filmas which is quite foreigu to say "In- tolerance.' Another thing which strikes you most forcibly is the absence of "stardom." Certainly the leading roles are played by the most efficient actors but there is not one person in all that immense A fascinating new mystery canvas who is not playing his or her part as if it were real life, or as if they were the only actor on the stage. You get exactly the impression that you are watching Pompeii as it was; that your eyes wander from house to house, from face to face; that all these people are going about, their business quite unconscious of your gaze or that they are actors in a drama. That is genius in direction which no American seems yet to have arrived at.
