RETURNS.
FAIR CARGO INWARD AND
THROUGH.
BRITISH SHIPS IN BALLAST.
There was a fair amount of freight both for the Colony and ports beyond during the 24 hours ended at ́9.a.m. yesterday. Among the arrivals were two British Ves sels, from Canton which came in
ballast.
Local imports totalled to 9,891 tous. These were contributed by ten steamers out of the 13 arrivals. The two best returns were 2,750 tons and 2,919 tons. The former were carried by the Santa Maru, from Shanghai, and the latter by the President Taft from San Francisco and Shanghai,
Through freights amounted to 11,865 tons. These were carried in five bottoms. The sa Hardret (Norwegian) topped the fist with 3,200 tons from Dalny, and Amoy. The President Jackson from Manila came
second with 2,878 508.

Ship's Sale Postponed. The sale of the steamship Fing Ping was to have taken place yes terday at noon at Messrs Lammert Street, but it was postponed until Brothers Auction Rooms," Duddell Thursday, December 20th.
This ship is now lying in Canton a bour and has a length of 115 feet, breadth of 94 feet, gross tonnage of 501, and HP. of 300. The ship is being sold by order of the mortgagees.
Trying To Get Free Passage. A Chekiang Chinese who had found Canton too turbulent for him came to the Colony to embark on the s.3. Szechuen for Shanghai, but his method of getting a passage thought right. He was found tid was not what the" ship's officers'
den in the steerage and this result- ed in his appearance be'ore the Marine Magistrate at the Harbour Office yesterday on a charge of boarding, the ship without per mission.
The man pleaded guilty but said that he had no money and was try- ing to stow himself away to Shang- hai. A fine of $14 was imposed.
