TROOPS AT WHITE HOUSE.
POPULAR ENTHUSIASM,
WASHINGTON, Nov. 13th. The visit of the Canadian troops to Washington ended yesterday with a ceremony of which the in- terest was as much historical as sentimental It saw the entry into the grounds of the White House of a force in British uniform for the Arst time since on the night of August 25th, 1514, General Ross and his men had set fire to the "President's House." But row British regimental colour dipped in salute to President Coolidge, while the Canadian band played the nations anthem of the United States, and crowds which witnessed theight cheered lustily,

The men from over the barder very certainly captured the imagina tion of Washington. They were picked units of the Royal Canadian deneas, Feb. 13th. and the Royal 22nd Regiments, Autolycus, Feb. 18th. trumpeters of the Royal Canadian Achilles, Feb. 97th. Horse Artillery and the Royal Ardon, Feb. 28th. Dragcons, the pipers and drum-Polyphemius, Feb. 28th. mere of the 48th Highlanders of Bellerophon, Mar, 2nd.
Calchas, Mar. 4th. Toronto, and the band, so strong, of the Royal Canadian Regiment, Sarpedon, Mar. 8th, barnished to the brightness of a sergeant-major's dream, swinging and moving with the precision of a piston. They had won the heart at Arlington of the great crowd Cemetery on Friday when the Cann dian monument to citizens of the United States who had died in Canadian uniform in the Great War was unveiled. They have been royally entertained at the frontier and in the Washington barracks. at dinners and at dancès, and their call on the President yesterday was model of what such a function should be.
British-India and Apear Line. Santhia, Jan. 2nd.. Garmula, Jan. 7th.
President Coolidge's Welcome, Mr. Coolidge received them in the south grounds of the White House, where with Mr. Vincent Massey, the Canadian Minister in Washing- too, and Major Murray Green, their commanding officer, in attendance he inspected them. They had marched from their assembling point a few squares distant escort ed by a company of the 12th United Stater Infantry, but entered the grounds of the White House alone, while their escort circled round the wall of the enclosure to meet them again at the lower west gate. Their band played, their pipers skirled, their arms. glittered in the sun, and the bright scarlet of their faultless lines glowed so gallantly that the cordiality with which the spectators received them was warmed to en- thusiasm. Their coming and the impression they created have help ed in no small measure to take the dedication of their country's monu- ment to the comrades of a great hour an inestimable contribution to international friendship..
