The drifter was visiting different ships taking off leave men to attend a naval dpace in Weymouth. The CANTON submarine, which was entering harbour, struck her amidships when she was between the battleships STRAITS & CALCUÍTA Emperor of India and Frem Pule.
A bola was nipped under the SANDAKAN drifter's engine room, and water poured in. The stokers rushed up on deck to join the crowd of oficers and men.
The mishap was seen from six vessels, of the Atlantic Fleet lying at anchor near by, and soon all ships' searchlights were playing on the scene. Bonts put off from other ships and, thanks to the discipline that prevailed, all the men taken off the drifter, which settled down by her stern and sank in six minutes.

It looked as if the submarine was trying to cross the drifter'i bows. The drifter turned in the same direction and was violently struck, several men on board be ing thrown off their feet by the force of the collision.
