GREAT GATHERING OF SEA CAPTAINS.
In the Mansion House on Septem- ber 28th the Lord Mayor, who is also Admiral of the Port of London, presided at the first, annual meet ing of the Court of the Company of Master Mariners, and he began his speech in good resonant tones with Deputy Master Mariner, wardens, and gentlemen of the Company of Master Mariners." He extended a. hearty welcome to this young com- pany, which, as he pointed out, was centuries overdue, and acknow ledged the debt that the City of London owed to the British mer abant service. London, indeed. owed its very existence to that service, which had contributed more to the bailling of the British E- pire than any other, body of men. and in the war became an integral purt of our first line of defence.

A PLEA THAT FAILED."
A plea that they had been assinte | ing the pantry boy and were un aware that the, liner had left the wharf failed at the Kowlon Magis- tracy yesterday morning, when, before Mr. W. Schofield, two Shanghai Chinese were charged with stowing away on the RMS. Empress of Asia from Shanghai.
It was shown that the defendants were discovered in the starboard for and rope locker twenty minutes after the ship left the whart, and in reply to this statement, defen- dants said that when they realised the liner had, left the wharf they bid in order to prevent the officers. finding them on board.
When bia whether the men could not have Worship enquired been taken back to Shanghai by the pilot in view of the short time since the liner had left port, it was stated that, the pilot refused to take the

ably, but the result, does not. The HAMBURG-AMERIKA LINIE,
heighest wave almost invariably comes from the widest expanse of water, but the shore facing such" an expanse' is nearly always protected adequately. For various resurs far narrower sons can work up quite a passable tidal wave, which, although not so high, does quite. as much damage because nothing. particular is expected, und no great, precautions are taken.
Thus it often happens that mer- chaat abips and men-of-war who are lying quite securely in an up- parently safe anchorage find them- scives in danger before any pre-
cautions can be taken. The United States Navy has been particularly unfortunate in this way, and in the. course of a few months in the lath aixties, had threo ships carried not hore. In a single gale the gunboat De Soto and the cruiser Joñongr hela in the West Indies found them- selves suddenly on dry land. With in a few months the Wateřée, was caught in a tidal ways off Arica and carried two miles iuland, to be deposited in the middle of a field, where she had to be abandoned.
Such waves must have been a tre mendous height; there is in fact no" reliable method of gauging th height of a tidal wave. It comes up and is all over so suddenly, and so many seashore influences came to bear that it is no use comparing it with waves encountered in the open, sca.
Even the biggest waves at sen rise to only 70 feet or a little more, yet tool observers on the shore,,have put down' tidal waves at 100 or 120 feet, and although this seems im possible—.-C. Daily News,
