AN UNPLEASANT CHOICE.
CREW ON A SINKING SHIP.
ONLY THE PARROT -
DROWNED.
When the London eil tanker San Frateran foundered on an achart- ed rock in the Magellan Straits, the captain and crew were faced with this dilemma:
Either they could land on a rocky island inhabited by savages of doubtful temper, or
They could set out in smal boats to a station 15 miles away with little hope of ever reaching
it.
Sea Pouring In,
A graphic account of how they were saved from the dilemma by the appearance of unather British vessel was told by one of the ship's ofheers who has just arrived home to Lorulen.
A large hole was ripped in the engine and boiler rooms when she #truck, he said, and the vessel began to take in water at such a rate that Capt. . H. Luya ordes. Led ali ship's Loats to be stocked
with provisions.
"Our lights and
wireless were
put out of action. We were thur completely isolated and the wind began to blow still harder. The Captain tried in vain to beach the ship on Carlos Island. Soon she had sunk down to the level of the after rail.
Three Boats Lost. The crew were then told of the alternatives
which faced them.
They decided to
try rowing, at- though we knew that we stood very little chance of getting to the station in the face of the gale and a wild sea.
"When everything was in readi- ares the s.3. Interarder hove a sight, and agreed to stand by and take us off. To launch our beats and get them safely to the furer arder was n terrible task, and we lest three of them. Despite tremen- daus difficulties, however, the entire crew of were saved.
I think the caly casualty was a, parrot belonging to one of the men." It was found drowned in the button of its cage."
