RETURNS.

AN IMPROVEMENT ON PRE- VIOUS DAY'S IMPORTS.

BUT FIGURES STILL BELOW AVERAGE.

Although yesterday's shipping returns showed an improvement with regard to local imports, of freight, as compared with Wednes day's return, the figures were still below the average, considering the number of vessels arriving for the twenty-four hours under review.

There were no fewer than 18 nr-

rivals for the twenty-four hours up to 8 a.m. yesterday, but of these only thirteen carried freight for this port, with vessels of other flags than British showing the prepon derance of cargo.

The total amount of freight im ported for Hong Kong was 13,344 tons, of which six British vessels only contributed a matter of 1,570 tons between them, and two of these vessels brought over 500 tons each The seven yessels of other nation- alities showed

Another new arrival to this port is the Modnera, which came in on Wednesday afternoon from Europe and Manila, with 447 tons of cargo for this port and 3,000 tons.for other ports.

The Modoera was built in 1992 by the Forth Shipbuilding and En gineering Company, of Allos, to the order of the Stoomvarts Maats Nederland, and engined by Arm strong Whitworth & Company of Newcastle, her equipment consist ing of four watertube boilera deve loping a nominal horsepower of 63

More Night Boats.

Another night boat' service has been started. The Sai On and the Tung On are now to maintain a night service. There will be beat from Canton at 8 am. each day and the same boat laeves Hong Kong at 1 am the following morning for Canton. Thus, if the Tung Un makes the trip down she goes up the same, night, remains at Canton daring that day and then comes down the following morning. It means that there is no day service by this line from Hong Kong."
