QUEER THAMES CRAFT.

MYSTERY SHIP AT TRINITY HOUSE.

FLOATING FIRE ENGINES.

Setting aside the Eners that work in and out of the river every hour of every tide, and the numberless bameless gypsics of the Seven Seas that come to London Town, `old Thames has a great a parade of little craft as any stretch of water that you may 6nd in all the world.

For instance, on a day of Bummer calm as we came in from the deep seg by the Princes Channel there came firing to us over the water a V-shaped mother of whitest foam. All that man could see that would make for such a dividing of the waters was a lean, incredibly sharp bow of varnished wood, that peered over the feathers of the spray as the lead of a foresight peers over the rotch of the backsight of a rific. As coon N we had seen these things she was upon us, a long, low shell of a racing motor-boat. It another moment she was sweeping down the Black Deep towards the

Knock John.

Off Southend, as we went sp-river with the tide, there passed un-one of those odd-looking contraptions which men call pleasure steamers She was blessed with a single stumpy funnel, a collapsible mast, and she squattered along the sur- face of the water like an elderly and querulous duck.

Off Trinity House Wharf, in Bugsby's Reach, there was another vessel that belonged to the order of queer craft. She was, I think, buoy layer, and maybe lighthouse tender, for Trinity House. Not content with ransacking the house of nearly every silver article to the total value of £200 and wrenching silver mountings from photograph frames burglars, one of whom is believed to have been a woman, who broke into the Vicar- age of St. Paul's Church, East Molesey, took a bottle of whisky, a syphon of soda water, and a bottle of port, and ate a leg of Lamb, finishing with apples and the vicar's cigarettes. The thieves took a beautiful communion set given to the vicar, the Rev. Hugh McMullan, by his father-in-law, Mr. J. Ander- son, of Highgate, on his ordination to the priesthood several years ago, but left his wer medals, and they' also took £10 from the viear's wal- let and some keys from the study wall,
