THE HONG KONG DAILY "PRESS, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20th, 1927.

THE HONG KONG BASEBALL SEASON.

TEAMS AND THEIR DOINGS VIEWED AND REVIEWED.

[B HONOLULU “KID.]

The baseball season in the Colony was brought to a close on ' Sunday when the South China Dingons again defeated their closest rivals, the Japanese, thereby winning the Lai Wah Shield.

During the last two months opinion has been very divided as to the merits of each team. It must also be admitted that the arrangement this year left much to he desired, and one only hopes that the cials of the Hong Kong Baseball Association will benefit by this season's experiences when laying down the rules for next your's games.

A fan who has not missed a single game this season kindly offered me a leat from his note book and some of the comments and "suggestions are worth publishing.

le aduits that the standard of play has been very good, and plenty of keenness was shown by the players and their supporters As the merits of the team, this fan considered the Japanese were in every way bettor players than their Chinese rivals. The Japanese lads played with science whereas the Chinese merely "bad the joss."A"glance at the averages compiled by the Official Scorer will show that the Japanese were better both in Belding and at hat. Their errors committed were fewer than those of the Dragons.

The Filipinos extended the Dragons fully in every game played.. This team should develop into a strong one and the Dragons and Japanese will have to look to their laurels next senson, "The Filipino boys hre keen as ninstard and pat plenty of pep into the game. They work with will and with more practice, they would become a hard team to beat.

The Americans, although manifesting good sportsmanship, lack the material. The players are selected from a small community and time does not permit them to practice very often. experienced player they have among them is Cockey.

The only

The..

The Club de Recreio should show more itterest. Their absenge from the field has upset the League Table more than once. players should develop more esprit de corp.

All players should be registered, and if this had been done, the unfortunate incident in the game between the Filipincs and Dragons would not have occurred.

Another matter which calls for urgent attention is the checking of rowdyisin among the crowd. There is no disguising that the Chinese who line the ropes always show. open antipathy towards the Japanese. They have even gone so far as to interfere with... the players.

During Sunday's game, the crowd, over 2.000 of them, rushed right up to the stand to jeer at the Japanese, and it took six Indian constables and one European sergeant to hold them back. The rowdies. however, are fairly amenable to appeals from a Chinese player. If one-of the players tells them to stop abusing the Japanese they generalig oly, and this nalarlly has made spectators wonder why the South China AA does not post oze or two members there to deal with the rowdy elements. It is up to them to do this in the interests of good feeling and true sports- wnship.

Your committee record with deep regret the deaths of Mr. G. H. Haskett Mr. G. Gipson and Mr. W. Knight..

I

GENERAL-It is a matter for re- gret that the formation of a Social Chib at Beaconsfield Arcade did not mature, but it is hoped in the near future to enlarge the playing ground and the club premises.

CRICKET :-First. Eleven, sixteen matches were played during the season, of which six were won, six drawn and four lost; the batting was, on the whole, good, but several players showed a lack of mid-week practice. Congratulations are given" to Mr. G. R. Sayer for a sparkling 118 and on again topping the bat- ting averages. The attack was un- fortunate in losing the services of Mr. E. B. Reed for the greater part of the season, and although all the bowlers worked hard and gave of their best it was in this depart ment that the lack of young talent in the Club was most noticeable. Mr. F. Baker proved the most consistent bowler and" Mr. G. R. Sayer secured the greatest number. of. wickets,

SECOND ELEVEN:-Played sixteen matches, won five, lest nine, drawn one. The season was not too suc- cessful from a playing point of view, but all games were keco and enjoyable. The batting was con- sistent, the bowling was weak.

Attendance at practice was again the chief trouble with both teams. and every endeavour will be made to provide suitable practice pitches this season.

Acknowledgment and thanks are Accorded to Mr. P. L. Lamble and Mr. F. H. Holdman for their ser vices as cricket representatives and Mr. W. Fincher and Mr. W. Sayers

as scorers.

TENNIA: We did not enter any teams in the Tennis League this year, it being suggested that we entertain officers and other ranks of the Shanghai Defence Force.

The Committee regret having to cancel the Club Championship owing to lack of support.
