PIRACY GRILLES INSTRUC.

TIONS..

[BY LONGSHOREMAN. ]

A general instruction regarding piracy grilles has been issued to shipping masters in a letter from the Harbour Master. This letter

· reads :-*

Uargo of Elme Alight.

During her last run from Wara tah Bay to Melbourne the ketch Defender took fire when 19 miles of Newhaven. She carried a cargo of lime, which had become ignited by the action of water.

The vessel sailed to Newhaven with sraoke curling about her rige ging and the crew-ready to leave at a moment's notice. When the anchor was dropped volunteers can menced the work of anloading the cargo. Bleeding from the nose and mouth and with their hands and cloth burit, the men could only spend two minutes in the hold fighting the blaze and removing the bags of time. In six hours they threw overboard 200 bags, eventual-

y coping with the fire.
