A new shipment of 21 Humber motor cycles has just reached the godowns of Messrs. Lado, Crawford, Ltd. These machines have had a good sale in Hong Kong since their introduction a short time ago.

So it would if only a sufficient number of enthusiastic motorists and motor cyclists could be found in the Colony. But many a similar idea has been consigned to limbo without trial simply because no one was interested.
The subject of the poor support given to British cars in Hong Kong has aroused a good deal of interest in the Colony Last week a local motorist ventured some trenchant remarks upon what he regarded as the apathy shown by British dealers in British cars. This week I have received a letter that discusses the case from a business aspect,
Points from this letter are ILS follows: In my experience the car most suited to the needs of Hong Kong is of 35 h.p. to 26 h.p., developing say 30 h.p..or 48 h.p. A five Beater touring or light aloon body is the most popular. There are many sound American ears of this class, both four and six- eyelinder selling at prices ranging from 81,800 (Max.) to about $3,000, whereas the British car of corres ponding power and specification will cost roughly double these prices, That the American car with proper care and attention will not last for at least five years is a fallacy proved by experience and record.
The use
to
any size or price of car. of the principle is restricted the Willys-Knight, Stearns-Knight. and Falcon ears which range in price from the verr luxurious
Stearns-Knight 8 cylinder models, through the two Willys-Knight models to the Falcon-Knight which is the lowest priced, car yet market ed with a double sleeve motor.

In the Knight type of engine, positively operated sleeves control the entry and exit of gases to the cylinders, while in the usual type of engine poppet valves must be operated against strong string ten- sion. Two sleeves moving in op posite directions through an tremely short distance, control the passage of gases into and out from Knight engine cylinders, replacing the many complicated parts which are used in the ordinary valve con struction. Outside of the cylinder design and the method of operating the sleeves, the construction of a Knight engine follows closely that used for other forms of internal combustion engines.

By means of this slight difference in construction two of the most im- portant items contributing toward | the expense of maintaining car are removed. These two opera- tions must be performed regularly. if the poppet, valve engine is to operate efficiently, and it is estimat- cd that they are responsible for at least half the upkeep cost for a car of that type....In a Knight type motur the sleeves slide smoothly over each other protected by a con stant film of oil so they are not subject to any appreciable wear. Carbon formation serves only to seal compression so there is no need for valve adjustments at any time. With every wish to support the British motor trade, a Hong Kong merchant cannot afford to import cars that he cannot sell and cen. sequently he turns to the American ears that he can sell.

The impacts of the valves-two for each cylinder with their metal seats, and the cams with the plun- gers, produce noise and vibration which is never present in the opera tion of double sleeves in the Knight engine.
