He is an old sailing ship man and his fund of anecdote and story; is all but inexhaustible, when he can be induced to open up. This is not to be wondered at, consider ing that he had command of the Metagame when attacked by a Ger- man submarine and brought, her safely through; that he was in the supply service of the White Army against the Reds; was once a win- ner of the white silk umbrella which is awarded to the first anaster to open the passenger traffic of the St. Lawrence every season; and has European passengers per 8.8. also had a spell, ashore as Marine Kitang Harus for Japan vid. MOTOR-CARS FOR ALL.

Motor-cars by instalments with- out a deposit is a new scheme to be started as the result of a trans- action completed by Mr. Selfridge on behalf of Messrs. Whiteley's.

It will no longer be necessary for the prospective buyer to pay a de posit. He will be required only to put down the first of twelve equal monthly instalments. For exam- pie, a man buying a second-hand mutor-car for 298 will give his re ferences, pay £8 down, and drive away.

Whiteley's are introducing an other innovation. A large garage at Staines in being converted into the first Whiteley Service Station, which, will offer special facilities to motorists who bought the motor- ears from the firm. This is to be the first of many similar service stations in various parts of the country. *******
