The first race for the American Challenge Cup, a remarkably hand some trophy, found Wheatcroft hot favourite, but there were many who knew that the New Zealand win went out against him was in better shape thai the one who fail Nor were el when they last met. they disappointed. Mr. R. R. Marsh, Export Manager of the Paraffine Products Co., San Francise, out n kuusiness trip*HE Motor Voreal through the Orient,
Best of all, there was fine Champions race, the result being a justification of the best opinions held of most natuta trainer clever jockey son 'and a-very gallant pany. The good opinion, held of Wheatcroft a week ago and the later switch to New Zealand were genuine, but all the time there was
very distinct regard for Morning Fligd, and the best qualified to judge cuni not be absolutely con- fident
"The Field Looked Well." It is not quite right to say, that
slow running suited New Zea land, for probably he could have done better stifl in a fast race. The real Inets were that Wheatcroft, though looking well, did not run up to form. As for Morning Flight, he has one pronounced weakness, which is every now and again-to- Bulk, only recovering when it is too late,
The field all looked well in the parade, Wheatcroft perhaps best of all. Morning Flight and Mark Over were very smart, and New Zealand hurdly could be recognized as the listless animal who paraded on the last occasion. Even little Firefly, who is not built to catch the eye, was full of life.
New Zealand Race. There is little to say about the race itself. Taking advantage of the fact that it was run in slow time, Norman Dallas judiciously kept back, but just before the last bend he sent New Zealand up,
A Beauty Show. The Tsingtao Handicap brought out a field that made one think that even all the arguments of the last few years, acrimonious though sonic of them have been, were well worth while. Never on China race course can there have been a parade of moré handsome race ponies. though let be understood that this remark excepts that mangrel mule Islam, the ugly duckling of the crossbreds. The held was proof also that it is possible to get collared the rails and brought the very strong entry of crossbreds under the right conditions. As a race, too, it was worth seeing and there was a grand finish. The official time was 3min. 69.4-5secs., which is a record. Warrenheid did this with hs, up and the record also must have been broken by Oramonde, Globeagles and Theatre. land.

The Derby. Not for many years has so much interest been shown in this race, People were lined three deep round the saddling enclosure for the parade. For looks and condition, Bananaland, Hunter's Folly and Delight easily were the most im- pressive, especially Mr. Day's " candidate, who in evory way wis a pieture. Perhaps it was Banana land's condition that gave him the race, for he won in the most con- vincing fashion, Firefly's best effort'
