SEAMAN'S DEATH BY DROWNING.

BRITISH SAILOR WHO FELL INTO THE HUANGPU

In H.M. Police Court, Shanghai, on Saturday last, the inquest on the body of ordinary seaman James S. Preaton, of H.M.S. Argus, was continued before Mr. O W King. Coroner.

Lieutenant F. R. Ward (H.M.S. Aryus) said that on April 13th at about 6.50 a.m. he was on board the pinnace on which the deceased had boarded at the Argus. On reaching the jetty the party proceeded to hud and although he did not actually see the deceased step off the pinnace, he understood that de ceased had already passed his rifle to another seaman on shore and had one font on the gunwale of the boat and the other on the jetty. He then apparently slipped and fell between the pinnace and the pontoon.

The offeer then rushed towards the deceased but was too late to save him. About two seconds later

deceased came to the surface but an attempt to grasp his clothing was unsuccessful. The current was swift and the body was hat Boen again.
