TRAGEDY AT SEA.

CHIEF OFFICER OF 8.8. "EDENDALE MURDERED.

A MOTIVELESS CRIME.

THE HONG KONG DAILY PRESS; FRIDAY, MAY 6th, 1927.

While it is difficult to comment

We were able to learn more of at length on the Report of the Sunning Piracy Commission which the stabbing of Mr. G. A. Ryles has just been issued by the long of the Heap Eng Moh steamer Kong Government, the summary of Edendale who has died in the hoy the report as cabled by enter]pital at Cheribon as the result of gives a clear idea of the main re- terrible wounds, reports the Straits commendations of the Commission, Timra, rays Shipping and Engineering.

The Commission has obviously discovered nothing now con- nection with piracy on the China Coast, but some of its recommenda- tions deserving of special

are attention.

Futile Regulations, Chief and foremost is that which advocates the rescission of the whole of the Hong Kong Piracy

WIFE CHARGED WITH MURDER OF AGED HUSBAND.

"He told me to-day to kill him and put a match to the place, and then to kill myself."

These words were said to have

been written by Selina Emily Bel- tlesworth Yearworth, aged 45, who

The body was found badly char- red in the house, which had been set on fire, and nine ribs had been broken

Mr. Ryle approached the man and repented his order. What hap- pened for the moment is not known distinctly as it was dark at the time, but Mr. Ryles was heard to exclaim that he was bleeding. The Captain, Mr. John Lyle, with other officers went to his assistance.

First Aid On Board,

The Regulations have been in Fortunately the second engineer, forms for exactly three years. They Mr. Dinsfield, possesses a know- replaced others equally as ill-fedge of first aid work and was advised and unsuitable, and were able to give him attention and to put into operation against the stitch his wounds. question.

The officers have known that the Regulations were grossly unanit able, and so have the owners; but. in spite of pirney after pirney, the Regulations were still kept intsel and inviolable, a semi-permanent monument to the lack of knowledge and understanding of the piracy problem by those who wore respon- sible for their issuance.

** Surning "' Case Taught Pirates Leason.

The master and offers of any ship pirated are still expected to resist the pirates. After the Sun- ning affair, it may seem compare dively easy but the Surning piracy probably taught the pirates lesson they will never forget, and it is extremely unlikely that the affair will ever be repeated.

This matter of resisting is in teresting. There

generally six officers (including the master)

are,

There is no doubt, however, that Mr. Ryles would have passed away in a very short time but for the presence of Mr. Dinsfield who did all that it was possible to do on the vessel.

After the arrival of the doctor it was decided to land Mr. Ryles

Cheribon. This was done but in spite of every attention he passed away later in the Cheribon Hos pital.

His alleged assailant-had-in-the meantine been secured and was handed over to the Police at Cheri- on where he is now being detained. Mr. Ryles joined the company in May, 1096, and is a single man.

There was apparently no cause

for this terrible deed. The accused had been working well previously and apart from the fact that, due Coast to the stranding of the vessel, he veheel. It is not unreasonable to had been called upon to work unusual had Rasume that normally at least two hurdor, nothing
