SEQUEL TO THE SINGAPORE | RIOTS.

INQUEST ON THE CHINESE VICTIMS.

SINGAPORE, April ath. The inquest was concluded in the Criminal District Court, before the acting Coroner (Colonel J. H. Tyte) and a jury consisting of two Euro- peans and three leading Chineso residents, into the deaths of aix Chi- neso who were killed in the shocting affair in front of Ereta Ayer police station on March 13th. Forty wit-

nesses were called.

Mr. G. G. Seth, Solicitor-General, appeared for the Attorney-General to conduct the inquiry.

Mr. Roland Braddel! appeared with Mr. S. B. Tan for the Consul General for China, and also for the persons under arrest in the civil jail.

Mr. J. G. Campbell represented Inspector F. J. Dale.

Mr. E. L. Talma appeared for the relatives of one of the deceased, Tay Quee Hian, and Mr. A. Y. I.. Davies for the relatives of five de ceased, Lee Young Wah, Lim Ber Feh, Leo Tye Khim, Foo Eob Kuang and Tam Chui Chuan.

The Inspector-General of Police (Mr. H. Fairburn) and other off- einls were present, and a large number of Chinese were in Court, together with representatives of the local "British and Chinese Press. The Consul General for China was also present.

The jury were accommodated with sents од the Bench They comprised the following:-Messrs. C. Salter, Ong Boong Tat, E. W. P. Fulcher, Gaw Khek Khiam and Lee Kong Chin.

The jury returned a verdict that "death was the result of gunshot. wounds indicted by the Police whilst dealing with a dense.crowd outside the Police Station."

Four gallant Frenchwomen who sheltered British soldiers at the risk of their lives in their homes behind the German lines during the war, were honoured by the citizens of London to-day;

The French- Madame Cardon, Madame Belmont Gobert, Madame, "Lesure, and daughter, and Madame" Baudhuin. The Lord Mayor re- cited their acta

Eeroism. of Madame Cardon, of Villame, and her husband, concealed Corporal Hill of the Eleventh Hussars for thirteen months. Then Hill was betrayed, and shot by the Germans. Madame Cardan was condemned to deth, but sentence was commuted to twenty years hard labour. Mon- sieur Cardon escaped, but right up to the Armistice led a life of in- credible suffering. He died a few years ago, a victim of his courage in harbouring a. British soldier.

Tragic Incident: Another tragedy followed the shooting of Corporal Hill. When his mother heard of his death, she lost her reason and never recovered it wholly, When she was told laat Friday that her son's benefactor was coring to London, she seemed overjoyed at the prospect of seeing Madame Cardon. Then she sudden- ly fell back dead.
